Personnel includes: Yanni. Personnel: Yanni (piano, keyboards). This collection of rare and never before released recordings by Yanni sparkles with imagination and flair and is sure to put a pulse in the bloodstream of even the casual listener. Being a skeptic, one will find a soothing yet orchestral wonder within the framework of each of Yanni's recordings. Ranging from a variety of instruments, the pianist/composer extraordinaire continues to bring charm and romance to life in his art. Presented here on Nightbird are seven dramatic and scintillating recordings, good for morning rise, airplane trips, car travel, and dreamy night escapades. "Nightbird" radiates with scorching guitars and bouncy conga percussion. Throughout the record is Yanni's assertive direction and piano lines. "Chasing Shadows" is a murky, haunting number dealing with the lives of those too quick on their feet, not giving themselves enough time to slow down, enjoy life and catch up with their shadow, and enjoying one's true sense of self. "Dance with a Stranger" leaves the listener to ponder about chance encounters and failed romances, or should-have-beens, to the excitement and anticipation of a new love interest. The plethora of instruments and sounds used in this record is mind-boggling, and it's fun for the listener just to sit back, kick up their feet, and dream through all the different impressions and colors of sound and timbre. Yanni does it again successfully, with gripping yet soothing, reflective music for the underpaid, overworked person at the end of the day. ~ Shawn M. Haney

'UNDER', the fourth and NEW Kenny Schick/Basement3 CD, is the heart-felt sound track of an amazingly extraordinary, romantic and life changing adventure in Australia. For Kenny, the last couple years of a long and diverse musical career have been all about bold reassessments of self, a redefinition of his sound, and the decision to take his very personal 'studio project', Basement 3, into the 'live' realm. Inspired by the soulful, naked approach of acoustic musicians such as Gillian Welch, Iron and Wine, and Nick Drake, Kenny made the brave move to take a decade long method of dense, complex orchestration and turn it upon it's head. The result of this seemingly contradictory musical approach, this 'stripping down', yields a product that is very accessible to a wide range of audiences and reveals Kenny's skill as a front man. In keeping with his journey of extreme changes and opposites, his quirky irreverent sense of humor is the perfect ying to the yang of his often dark, introspective music. With the freedom and mobility a solo act affords, and the desire to explore his mind and this new musical direction more deeply, Kenny started to ponder the possibilities of travel. Having had more interest in his artsy music abroad, he entertained the idea of a musical adventure in Europe, but an Australian friend redirected his focus to the southern part of the planet. Having lived his whole life in the San Francisco bay area, Kenny needed a little shove to take this big dive - and it was New Year's Day 2006 that Kenny met an Australian girl named Sabine on myspace.com. After a 7 month online romance, Kenny quit all his bands, his part time job, left family and friends, and set out on a year long adventure down under. The new Kenny Schick/Basement3 CD, 'UNDER', was born on the opposite side of the world. Mostly written and recorded on a laptop in a small apartment in St. Kilda, Victoria, 'UNDER' is an all-acoustic venture. It is naked, exposed, and raw-it both documents and reflects the 'journey' and fulfills the evolution

Liam Neeson is an unstoppable force in this adrenaline-fueled thriller from director Pierre Morel. Bryan (Neeson) has taken early retirement from the CIA in order to live closer to his teenage daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace). Bryan's government work kept him away from Kim for much of her childhood, and he's now trying to make up for lost time. When Kim announces that she's taking a trip to Paris with her friend Amanda (Katie Cassidy), Bryan is apprehensive about her traveling on her own. His worst fear is soon realized, as Kim and Amanda are abducted upon their arrival in France. Bryan immediately springs into action, using his well-honed CIA skills to piece together clues from a single, frantic phone call he received from Kim. He hops a plane to Paris, determined to rescue his daughter before she falls off the grid completely. With some help from his old CIA buddies, he tracks down the kidnappers-an Albanian crime ring known for selling young girls into the sex trade. He quickly takes matters into his own hands, plowing his way through Paris's underworld as the clock ticks down and the bullets fly. His search propels him into the upper echelons of a massive crime ring, putting him closer and closer to his beloved daughter. Neeson is known for tackling extremely cerebral roles, so it is interesting to see him in full-on action-hero mode. In TAKEN he is no less than a crime-fighting machine-a Bourne/Bond hybrid with a deathly serious baritone. And while he spends most of the film firing Uzis and snapping necks, he still manages to deliver a moving performance as an estranged father fighting for what he loves most in the world. The film undeniably owes a lot to Neeson's acting chops. He manages to raise this rather thinly plotted, deeply violent film a bar above your typical action fare.

'Open Up Your Heart' is the first studio-recorded CD from the Chicago Children's Choir. Made possible by a grant from Bank One and JPMorgan Chase, the CD features songs from around the world and a wide-variety of musical styles, such as South African folk songs, traditional classical pieces, gospel and pop. Released in December 2005, 'Open Up Your Heart' is a reflection of what the Chicago Children's Choir is all about, bringing children together from diverse racial, cultural and socieo-economic backgrounds; celebrating these diversities while setting a standard for the achievement of youth, both socially and musically. The CD begins with Vela Vela, a South African song of welcome. The Choir developed a special affinity for South African music after a traveling there in 1996. Shosholoza and Iidonga Zajericho were taught to the Choir while in South Africa. CCC alumna and now associate conductor of the Chicago Children's Choir, Mollie Stone, was so deeply moved by this trip that she devoted her college studies to South African music. Toyi Toyi and Ke Nali Monna are pieces that she brought back from her studies in South Africa and have become part of the core repertoire of the Choir. Hanuman's Heart is from the sold out, Jeff Award-nominated original world musical, 'Sita RAM;'a fusion of musical styles based on the timeless Indian epic, 'Ramayana.' Selections from 'Sita RAM' are now available on CD as well at cdbaby.com Tatkovina (a Macedonia folk song) and Svadba (from Bulgaria) are world folksongs, brought to us by friends of the Choir. Since the Choir is composed of such diverse young people, they are often our greatest sources for original music. One of our alumni sent Tatkovina to us upon his return to his native country. The unique vocal production of Svadba illustrates teaching philosophy of the Choir - which is to perform music in its most authentic interpretation and sytle. The message of Bridge over Troubled Water and I Need You to Survive capture a fundamental element of the Choir's mission - not only do

King Britt's entry in the producer-friendly Beat Generation series from BBE is a real Philadelphia experiment, the type of hip-hop record that the former Digable Planets DJ, Sylk 130 leader, and producer extraordinaire, had always wanted to make. More than a decade of gig traveling had introduced Britt to some talented rappers, and his long list of contacts sparked a host of great features here, for familiar names as well as a few fresh Philly faces. Though he included a few straight vocal tracks ("for the people that know me for doing songs and working with fantastic vocalists"), most of these are rap tracks with few pretensions, just King Britt's textured, keyboard-heavy production, and a dizzying range of beats that puts commercial rap trackmasters to shame. Britt apparently likes working with distinctive rappers, and he called on a few of the best: Quasimoto, Posdnous & Trugoy from De La Soul, Bahamadia, Cherrywine (aka Butterfly from Digable Planets), and Capit

California, 1993: Neil Collins and Adam Tayler, two young British men on the cusp of adulthood, meet at a hostel in San Diego. They strike up a friendship that, while platonic, feels as intoxicating as a romance; they travel up the coast together, harmlessly competitive, innocently collusive, wrapped up in each other. On a camping trip to Yosemite they lead each other to behave in ways that, years later, they will desperately regret. The story of a friendship built on a shared guilt and a secret betrayal, The Faithful Couple follows Neil and Adam across two decades, through girlfriends and wives, success and failure, children and bereavements, as power and remorse ebb between them. Their bifurcating fates offer an oblique portrait of London in the boom-to-bust era of the nineties and noughties, with its instant fortunes and thwarted idealism. California binds them together, until-when the full truth of what happened emerges, bringing recriminations and revenge-it threatens to drive them apart. The Faithful Couple confirms Miller as one of the most exciting and sophisticated novelists in the UK - someone who can tell a great story, with a sense of serious moral complexity. This is that rare bird: a literary novel with mass appeal as well as the potential to win prizes.

Julia Hoop, a twenty-five-year-old counselling psych student, is working on her thesis, exploring an idea which makes her graduate supervisor squirm. She is conducting interview after interview with a group of women she affectionately calls the Molestas - women whose experience of childhood sexual abuse did not cause physical trauma. Julia is the expert, she claims, because she has the experience; her own father, Dirtbag, a furniture designer and failed poet, disappeared when she was eight leaving behind nothing but his Dylan Thomas book, and a legacy of addiction and violence. But the more Julia learns, the less certain she is of what she believes. When both her boyfriend and her graduate advisor break up with her on the same day, Julia leaves her city of Vancouver on a bicycle for a cross-Canada trip in search of her father, or so she tells people. Julia will visit the three cities from which he's contacted her over the years: Banff, Alberta; Redvers, Saskatchewan; and Kingston, Ontario. Her unexpected travel partner is Smirks, a handsome athlete who also has a complicated history, and with whom Julia is falling in love. Their travel days are marked by peaks of ecstatic physical exertion, and their nights by frustrated drinking and drugs. After an unsettling incident in rural Saskatchewan involving a trio of aggressive children, Julia wakes up in the morning to discover Smirks has disappeared. Everything, once again, falls apart. Sometimes shocking in its candour, yet charmed with enigmatic characters, PEDAL is an exploration of the potholes and pitfalls of identity. It is a close look at how we are shaped by accidents of timing: trauma and sex, brain chemistry and the landscape of our country. PEDAL challenges beliefs we hold dear about the nature of pedophilia, the essence of innocence and the idea that the past is something one runs from.

A guy whose life is an endless party is suddenly confronted with his adulthood under unexpected circumstances in this independent comedy. Jamie (Michael Cera) is a footloose American traveling through Chile who devotes his waking hours to getting wasted on whatever plant or powder crosses his path. Jamie and his friend Champa (Juan Andres Silva) are on the road with Champa's brothers in tow (Jose Miguel Silva) and (Agustin Silva) when they decide to hit the desert of Atacama, which is home to a fabled variety of hallucinogenic cactus. En route, Jamie encounters Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffmann), a fellow American fascinated with New Age philosophies and neo-hippie lifestyles. Jamie impulsively asks Crystal to join him for the trip to Atacama, but it doesn't take long for her to get on his nerves, and the new insights he experiences while tripping on the cactus products only help so much. Writer and director Sebastian Silva (whose siblings play Champa and his brothers) based CRYSTAL FAIRY (aka CRYSTAL FAIRY AND THE MAGIC CACTUS) on events from his own reckless youth; the film received its North American premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Audio Mixer: Mark Rankin. Arranger: Bombay Bicycle Club. Bombay Bicycle Club's fourth studio album, 2014's So Long, See You Tomorrow, finds the band building upon the dance-oriented sound of 2011's A Different Kind of Fix while still remaining faithful to their melodic, introspective indie rock roots. Once again centered around the lead vocals of Jack Steadman, the album was purportedly written while Steadman was traveling through Europe and India, and many of the songs on So Long, See You Tomorrow contain samples of the various sounds, music, and rhythms Steadman encountered on his trip. And while there are definitely Bollywood-esque qualities here, especially on such songs as the hypnotic and driving "Overdone" and the equally as swirling "Carry Me," the results are never overt or heavy-handed. These are organic, living productions that touch upon rave culture and world music while remaining rooted in melodic songcraft. The album also features guest lead and harmony vocals from British singer/songwriters and rising pop divas Lucy Rose and Rae Morris. All of this stylistic and creative synergy lends the album a layered, late-'80s adult contemporary vibe. In fact, cuts like the sparkling "Luna" and the yearning "Home by Now" definitely bring to mind So-era Peter Gabriel. Similarly, the moving ballad "Eyes Off You" has sustained drama that recalls Gabriel's classic 1986 duet with Kate Bush, "Don't Give Up." Ultimately, So Long, See You Tomorrow is highly engaging, thoughtful, kaleidoscopic pop music for citizens of the world. ~ Matt Collar

A woman eager to grant what could be her husband's last wish ends up on a road trip with an ill-mannered criminal in this comedy from writer and director Robbie Pickering. Linda White (Rachael Harris) has been married for more than 20 years to Abe (John Diehl), a Christian so devout that he refuses to have sex with his wife; when the couple had trouble conceiving early in their marriage, a doctor discovered that Linda was infertile, and believing that sex without producing offspring is a sin, Abe insisted their union be celibate. Linda, an obedient spouse and devout Christian, has obeyed Abe's edict, but when he suffers a stroke likely to claim his life, Linda makes a surprising discovery - Abe has been making frequent deposits at a sperm bank, and wants to meet one of the children he's sired before he dies. Linda is able to track down one of the products of Abe's seed, but Raymond (Matt O'Leary) is hardly the sort of son most folks wish for - he's a mean-spirited prison escapee with a taste for drugs who agrees to travel from Florida to Texas with her only to avoid the cops who are on his trail. At first, Linda and Raymond mix as well as oil and water, but after a few days on the road the two discover they have a bit more in common than they expected. NATURAL SELECTION won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival.

Personnel: Taigen Kawabe (vocals); Yuki Tsujii, Kohhei Matsuda (guitar); Monchan Monna (drums). The booming, Bonham-esque drums that begin "Inu," the fourth song on Japan-by-way-of-London psych unit Bo Ningen's third album, III, point to a band bred on classic heavy rock. The clean swaggering guitars that come in shortly seem to back up this classic rock feel, but before too long the song starts taking on a strange shape, contorted with bubbling echo effects and mangled choppy guitar flutters that are eventually rooted into place with a minimal ping-ponging bassline right out of a Stereolab tune. Manic, shouty vocals and haunted whispers layered on top of each other by singer Taigen Kawabe make the song all the more unpredictable, as does the driving grunge rock bridge that comes in two-thirds of the way through. Dissecting the songs on III is a fun exercise in realizing how unexpected the band's sound is, mashing road-rage rock riffs and psychedelic production witchcraft with unexpected funk breakdowns, space rock trip-outs, weird time changes, and moments of overblown Seattle circa 1991 grunge guitar fuzz. It's a wild brew, coming off like the more rock-oriented material from early Boredoms albums and with the same boundless spirit of early albums from Krautrock legends like Faust or Amon Duul II. Highlights are many, including the frantic "CC," which features contributions from Savages' Jehnny Beth, and the comparatively subdued adventure into deep space that is "Mukaeni Ikenai." Moving gracefully between stretched-out and melancholic space rock sprawl and frothing explosions of psych rock power, Bo Ningen display complete control of their seemingly unhinged muse, creating an always colorful album that travels a spectrum of sounds based on other planets as well as the depths of the band's collective nervous system. ~ Fred Thomas

Singer, songwriter, and producer. Yolanda, an accomplished singer, has made great strides in developing and creating a unique and special musical style. Born in Brooklyn New York, this is where she was influenced and surrounded with music and many musical artists. Yolanda became involved in music at an early age. She participated in musical productions and plays, and was always chosen for special presentations because of her great talent. Yolanda moved to Virginia, and her dreams of traveling the world and reaching the masses began. Yolanda first reached out in her local community, singing in churches, group homes, youth groups, drama companies as well as winning several local music competitions. Yolanda felt her career needed to move beyond the local arena. She knew that in order to reach national and international audiences, she would have to make drastic moves. Yolanda decided to launch a thirteen week radio show entitled 'Praises Through Songs' which became extremely successful. The radio show increased Yolanda's popularity, allowing her to launch her debut album 'Look What He's Done For Me', which immediately made an impact on the lives of many people in the USA as well as Great Britain and Denmark. This album paved the way for TV and radio appearances, newspaper reviews, concerts and tours. Spurred by this success, Yolanda took great pride in producing her second album 'My Secret Place'. She knew this album would be the start of something big, and has been very glad about the progress it has already made. Yolanda was quickly invited to Europe to perform with the European Metropolitan Orchestra. This trip was highly successful, and plans are currently being made for Yolanda to tour Holland, England, France and Italy in the near future.

Jean-Paul Sartre is one of the undisputed giants of 20th-century philosophy. His intellectual writings popularizing existentialism combined with his creative and artistic flair have made him a legend of French thought. His tumultuous personal life - so inextricably bound up with his philosophical thinking - is a fascinating tale of love and lust, drug abuse, high profile fallings-out and political and cultural rebellion. This substantial and meticulously researched biography is accessible, fast-paced, entertaining, often amusing and at times deeply moving. Existentialism and Excess covers all the main events of Sartre's remarkable seventy-five-year life from his early years as a precocious brat devouring his grandfather's library, through his time as a brilliant student in Paris, his wilderness years as a provincial teacher-writer experimenting with mescaline, his World Ward II adventures as a POW and member of the resistance, his post-war politicization, his immense amphetamine fulled feats of writing productivity, his harem of women, his many travels and his final decline into blindness and old age. Along the way there are countless intriguing anecdotes, some amusing, some tragic, some controversial. His loathing of crustaceans and belief that he was being pursued by a giant lobster, his escape from POW camp, his many affairs, his meetings with Roosevelt, Hemingway, John Huston, Mao, Castro, Che Guevara, Khrushchev, Tito, his feuds with Aron, Camus, and Merleau-Ponty, the bombing of his apartment, his influence on the May 1968 uprising, his long and complex relationship with Simone de Beauvoir. Existentialism and Excess also gives serious consideration to his ideas and many philosophical works, novels, stories, plays, and biographies revealing their intimate connection with his personal life. An entertaining, thought-provoking and compulsive book, much like the man himself.
