AT LONG LAST, TIME FOR LOVE! A WEEKEND RENDEZVOUS, A SECRET COTTAGE, AND ROMANCE! After Crystal has finally broken up with Travis and Flynn has ended his engagement with Zanna, they are free to act on their feelings. A weekend away is exactly what they need to discover more about each other. But even though they'd only met twice, they can't help but anticipate that there is more to what they're feeling. There is no mistaking it. Something binds Chrystal and Flynn together, and even they can't deny it. She would like to call it falling in love, but there's something more. Something that's almost… magical. She might have a chance for a perfect Christmas after all. But the romantic weekend is a bit distracted by Flynn's insistence that there are some things that Chrystal needs to know about herself. She highly doubts that Flynn would know more about herself than she does, so what can it be that is so important he is at it like a dog with a bone? Do you want a clue? How about… fairy dust? "Now, I would like for you to move forward to this last week or so in your life. First, there was the little girl, Maddie, who won that incredibly lucky spending trip in the toy store. Then there was Claire, her mother, who you managed to help get into a very nice apartment at a price she can afford. Most of all, there's Rayna and her miracle pregnancy that occurred after you told her that you wished more than anything that you could make it happen for her." "All of those things are strictly coincidence," Chrystal said incredulously. "Don't forget about the woman at the travel agency," he continued as if she hadn't spoken. "Y

As the environment becomes more fragile, existing transportation networks are more and more strained. Issues such as food miles and embodied energy in goods and products will become far more significant. Personal carbon quotas are likely to force a re-evaluation of our current lifestyles and single trips will carry greater levels of expectation. Casual long distance travel may be socially decried. Special Agent Dillon Reece is the prime member of a newly formed Special Interdiction Unit operating within the Air Force's Office of Special Investigation (AFOSI/OSI). He's a graduate of the Air Force Academy where he was selected for pilot training but tragically, the loss of a loved one in a drug buy gone wrong changed his career focus. He moved into intelligence work and then into the OSI when the special unit was formed. He brings an ability to his investigations that's garnered him praise and awards from all levels of command. Word of his multiple abilities usually precedes him into any investigative situation but his ability to lead a team proves invaluable during tense circumstances. An academy buddy, Major John Littlemore, is the commander of an aircraft maintenance unit at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. When one of the Major's personnel is found shot to death outside his apartment in a nearby community, he enlists the assistance of his college pal to help the local agents solve the mystery of who killed the Airman, and why? At first, there is dissent among the locals. They don't see the need for an outsider. It presents problems for the successful completion of the murder investigation and the closedown of criminal activities in several operational areas. Join Dillon as he travels from Florida to Germany and then into Saudi Arabia in search of the killer or killers. Along the way he directs maneuvers to close down a production and smuggling operation near the Yemen border, brings justice to pushers in California, and gets justice for the death of a Saudi prince's two sons during a raid at the Riyadh connections processing house. The style is detailed, allowing readers to put themselves in each location as the various parts of the puzzle are put together for the final assaults. In this humorous travelogue round Cuba, the hapless author suffers from both urban myths and his Missus (aka the Drinks Police). The first he debunks as they occur; the crises his Missus causes, or would have caused but for his timely intervention, are a more serious matter. Acutely aware that Cuba is certain to change in the near future and probably radically, award-winning author David M. Addison was anxious to experience the country as it is now, under communism and Castro. Apart from describing what daily life is like for ordinary Cubans, he also delves into Cuba's past - from the original inhabitants and post-Columbian conquest to the Wars of Independence and the Bay of Pigs and its aftermath. On the literary trail, Addison pays homage to Hemingway as he follows in his footsteps. And if that should necessitate a visit to a bar or two, that can't be helped. It's not a lame excuse for a bar crawl despite what the Drinks Police may think. It goes without saying that in Cuba you can't avoid classic cars and cigars but the author also takes a close look at Cuba's art and architecture, flora and fauna and not least, the country's other most famous product - rum. Another cause for a crisis as far as the Missus is concerned. A mine on all aspects of Cuban culture both past and present, this is useful background reading for anyone intending a visit to Cuba as well as being a handy accompaniment to your guidebook when you go. Or, if armchair travelling is more your thing, pour yourself a glass of rum or mix a mojito and learn and laugh your way round Cuba.

ABOUT THE BOOK The story of IPA beer starts, as most tales of good beer usually do, in a British pub. The term "India Pale Ale" is a bit misleading because the beer is not brewed in India, but rather originates in Britain previously destined for the Indian marketplace. IPA beers originated as "October ales," named so because they were typically brewed during that month to accompany British sailors on their trips to the East Indies. The long journey proved problematic for darker beers; although often preferred by the British public, these beers would spoil by the end of the journey. The creation of the IPA solved the challenges of traveling for months by boat through extreme temperatures. IPAs in particular incorporate more hops, which contribute to the bitter, flowery, or citrusy flavors. The term "hops" refers to the flower of a particular vine, a quintessential aspect of beer-making. Historically, the production of IPA used hops to help stabilize beer on its journey to the Indies. Hops act as a natural preservative, so the beer would travel better with more hops during the days before modern refrigeration techniques. IPAs eventually gained popularity in Britain and other parts of the world (the American Pale Ale is a variation using American hops) as brewers served the beer in pubs, and consumers began to like and even prefer the flavor. Since the birth of the nation, we have turned to stories about the American South to narrate the rapid ascendency of the United States on the world stage. The idea of a cohesive South, different from yet integral to the United States, arose with the very formation of the nation itself. Its semitropical climate, plantation production, and heterogeneous population once defined the New World from the perspective of Europe. By founding U.S. literature through opposition to the South, writers boldly asserted their nation to stand apart from the imperial world order. "Our South" tracks the nation/South juxtaposition in U.S. literature from the founding to the turn of the twentieth century, through genres including travel writing, gothic and romance novels, geography textbooks, transcendentalist prose, and abolitionist address. Even as the southern states became peripheral to U.S. politics and economy, Jennifer Rae Greeson demonstrates that in literature the South remained central to the expanding and evolving idea of the nation. Claiming the South as our deviant and recalcitrant 'other', Americans have projected an anti-imperial imperative of domesticating and civilizing, administering and integrating underdeveloped regions both within our borders and beyond. "Our South" has been a primal site for thinking about geography and power in the United States.

By covering most of the 20th century plus more than a decade of the 21st, Simkins explores a diverse range of subjects. Purpose: to inform and amuse the reader as well as to portray himself in a variety of incarnations. Don't we all inhabit more than a single identity? This writer is no exception. He is a boy, man, husband, father, and concurrently, an employee, employer, sport lover and participant at all levels, world traveler, WW2 veteran of North African and Italian war theaters, cancer survivor, and legally blind. Marvin has striven to bring all elements of his busy, productive life to bear in this long voyage of discovery. In setting down the narrative, he has attempted to be as candid as possible. In so doing he discloses a fallible person who is, in turn, reverent and irreverent: a person who does not shy away from strong and sometimes questionable language. He tries to paint himself as a human being with all the attributes and flaws that entails. He cares not if the picture shows him with some warts. The old Hollywood version of perfection he is not. By focusing on persons, places, events, and cultural phenomena, rather than always on himself, the writer is attempting to present the forces that have made him the individual he is: unique and idiosyncratic. No attempt is made to exercise a value judgment with regard to him, though such forbearance is not exercised on many other subjects which crop up in the course of the book. It is the obvious aim of the author to draw pictures of the environments, times, mores: in short, the full flavor and essence of the long time spread during which he has dwelt on earth, well in excess of the biblical Three score and ten. The good fortune of his longevity he ascribes to genes, healthy living and life style, but most important, Chance and Luck. That his wife, Beatrice, has not only accompanied him on the long voyage, but has caused the trip to be both productive and enjoyable is icing on the cake. The question of whether

Death Valley is a place of record-breaking heat and unexplained natural oddities a place where salt beds descend a thousand feet below the surface; where inch-long fish swim in a 112-degree creek; where huge boulders slide mysteriously across a dry lakebed. There are also gas stations, convenience stores, a visitor center, and a five-star hotel. Despite the modern conveniences, however, it's still quite easy to die in Death Valley. Author John Soennichsen spent decades hiking, exploring, and observing as much of this forbidding yet fascinating region as possible. Based on journals kept during his travels, Live! From Death Valley relates his experiences in the region and examines the history, geology, and philosophical inspirations of the surrounding area. Alongside his own stories Soennichsen weaves an imaginative retelling of William Manly and the Bennet-Arcane party's fateful pioneer trip through Death Valley in 1849 50, as well as modern-day tales of UFO sightings, doomsday prophets, and movie and TV production sets. Part guidebook, part autobiography, part narrative, Live! From Death Valley chronicles the raw history, weirdness, and geographical charm of this extraordinary place

With the exception of his Majesty, who sat in the side-box, near the stage, they all occupied the magnificent box in the centre of the house, already described, brilliantly illuminated, hung with a rich drapery, and ornamented with mirrors and gilding. The boxes contained the most select society. Among the ladies there was a fair sprinkling of beauty; but Lady B, who graced the box in which I had the honour of sitting, and who had just returned from a trip to Moscow during the summer holidays, was easily distinguished amongst the fairest Berlinoises; and, from the first of her entering the house, attracted universal attention. The Duke of Cumberland, on perceiving her from the Royal box, came round to pay her a visit, during the lead-footed minutes which toiled heavily along, before the long-wished opera began. At length the orchestra, consisting of nearly double the number of performers composing the orchestra of the King's Theatre in London, began the magnificent overture to Winter's new opera, entitled "The Interrupted Sacrifice,"(DasUnterbrochenOpferfest), which was divinely MADEMOISELLE SONTAG. 287 executed. No one can form an idea of the difference between the performance of this, or any other piece of music, by a German orchestra, and the orchestra of any other nation, who has not heard both. One of the highest gratifications which a successful composer can enjoy, must be that of having his productions executed in such style, and in so admirable a manner. When the uproar which the overture excited had ceased, all eyes and opera-glasses were at once directed towards the stage, and we watched with impatience for the appearance of the idol of the night. At last, Mirr.

The troubles of the airline system have become acute in the post-terrorist era. As the average cost of a flight has come down in the last twenty years, the airlines have survived by keeping planes full and funneling traffic through a centralized hub-and-spoke routing system. Virtually all of the technological innovation in airplanes in the last thirty years has been devoted to moving passengers more efficiently between major hubs. But what was left out of this equation was the convenience and flexibility of the average traveler. Now, because of heightened security, hours of waiting are tacked onto each trip. As James Fallows vividly explains, a technological revolution is under way that will relieve this problem. Free Flight features the stories of three groups who are inventing and building the future of all air travel: NASA, Cirrus Design in Duluth, Minnesota, and Eclipse Aviation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. These ventures should make it possible for more people to travel the way corporate executives have for years: in small jet planes, from the airport that's closest to their home or office directly to the airport closest to where they really want to go. This will be possible because of a product now missing from the vast array of flying devices: small, radically inexpensive jet planes, as different from airliners as personal computers are from mainframes. And, as Fallows explains in a new preface, a system that avoids the congestion of the overloaded hub system will offer advantages in speed, convenience, and especially security in the new environment of air travel.

American metropolitan areas today are divided into neighborhoods of privilege and poverty, often along lines of ethnicity and race. City residents traveling through these neighborhoods move from feeling at home to feeling like tourists to feeling so out of place they fear for their security. As Gerald Frug shows, this divided and inhospitable urban landscape is not simply the result of individual choices about where to live or start a business. It is the product of government policies-and, in particular, the policies embedded in legal rules. A Harvard law professor and leading expert on urban affairs, Frug presents the first-ever analysis of how legal rules shape modern cities and outlines a set of alternatives to bring down the walls that now keep city dwellers apart. Frug begins by describing how American law treats cities as subdivisions of states and shows how this arrangement has encouraged the separation of metropolitan residents into different, sometimes hostile groups. He explains in clear, accessible language the divisive impact of rules about zoning, redevelopment, land use, and the organization of such city services as education and policing. He pays special attention to the underlying role of anxiety about strangers, the widespread desire for good schools, and the pervasive fear of crime. Ultimately, Frug calls for replacing the current legal definition of cities with an alternative based on what he calls "community building"-an alternative that gives cities within the same metropolitan region incentives to forge closer links with each other. An incisive study of the legal roots of today's urban problems, City Making is also an optimistic and compelling blueprint for enabling American cities once again to embrace their historic role of helping people reach an accommodation with those who live in the same geographic area, no matter how dissimilar they are.

Excerpt: .drawn up all in one piece. This abyss below the stage was obtained at an immense cost, as the architect had to lay the foundations far below a subterranean body of water, but the advantage thus gained enables them to present scenes that are marvelous. The singers in this opera are pupils of the Conservatoire, and the corps de ballet consists of the most distinguished dancers of the day. Great attention is paid to costume and general effect. During the matchless performances of a night that I was present, there were at one time nine large horses and a procession of several hundred actors upon the stage, and it was far from being full. One of the most beautiful and astounding performances of the night was the production of a series of transformations that were as sudden and as astonishing in their developments as is the metamorphosis of the gaudy butterfly from the groveling worm. As the curtain rose there stood upon the stage a mighty fortress, massive and strong. We had seen it but long enough to observe how thick and how rough from age its weather-beaten walls were, when there was heard a crash, and the mighty citadel had fallen out of sight; but there still remained a most beautiful castle which must have been contained inside of the citadel but hid from the view by its towering walls. This castle was beautiful beyond description. It was fairer far than the castles of the kings seem to be, except when distance lends enchantment to their view. But the second scene was as ephemeral as the first. We beheld its fascinating beauties only a few seconds when its four walls again dropped into the abyss below, and there issued from its inner apartment a host of beautiful little actresses such as I did not see upon any other stage in Europe. These little fairy-like beauties, many perhaps not more than from 5 to 10 years of age, all dressed in the most brilliant costumes, at once skipped into a dance running the ring and tracing the mazy round, to the.

Inspired by long walks and extended backcountry trips on Washington's Olympic Peninsula, Mary Peck's contemplative photographs evoke the stillness and balance one can find by slowing down and simply paying attention. Neither idealized nor nostalgic, Peck's photographs point toward beauty and hope in a landscape that has suffered its share of environmental indignities, yet still carries the powerful mystery of wildness into an uncertain future. Charles Wilkinson's illuminating essay traces historical attitudes toward land and water in the American West, and reflects on the now-outmoded laws that have governed development for nearly two centuries. With the impending removal of two dams, erected on the Elwha River almost one hundred years ago, wild salmon, long prevented from reaching upstream spawning areas, are about to return and restore their ancient runs on one of the most diverse and productive streams in the country. Images and text afford us glimpses of the primeval power that still lingers in this wild place. Peck's meditations on the roadless ocean beaches, the emerald river valleys with their old-growth temperate rain forests, and the denuded hillsides urge the reader to acknowledge the less tangible values we must consider in managing our natural resources.

The Novel or Romance of Waverley made its way to the public slowly, of course, at first, but afterwards with such accumulating popularity as to encourage the Author to a second attempt. He looked about for a name and a subject; and the manner in which the novels were composed cannot be better illustrated than by reciting the simple narrative on which Guy Mannering was originally founded; but to which, in the progress of the work, the production ceased to bear any, even the most distant resemblance. The tale was originally told me by an old servant of my father's, an excellent old Highlander, without a fault, unless a preference to mountain dew over less potent liquors be accounted one. He believed as firmly in the story as in any part of his creed. A grave and elderly person, according to old John MacKinlay's account, while travelling in the wilder parts of Galloway, was benighted. With difficulty he found his way to a country seat, where, with the hospitality of the time and country, he was readily admitted. The owner of the house, a gentleman of good fortune, was much struck by the reverend appearance of his guest, and apologised to him for a certain degree of confusion which must unavoidably attend his reception, and could not escape his eye. The lady of the house was, he said, confined to her apartment, and on the point of making her husband a father for the first time, though they had been ten years married. At such an emergency, the laird said, he feared his guest might meet with some apparent neglect. 'Not so, sir,' said the stranger; 'my wants are few, and easily supplied, and I trust the present circumstances may even afford an opportunity of showing my gratitude for your hospitality. Let me only request that I may be informed of the exact minute of the birth; and I hope to be able to put you in possession of some particulars which may influence in an important manner the future prospects of the child now about to come into this busy and changeful world. Many pens have been burnished this year of grace for the purpose of celebrating with befitting honour the second centenary of the birth of Henry Fielding; but it is more than doubtful if, when the right date occurs in March 1921, anything like the same alacrity will be shown to commemorate one who was for many years, and by such judges as Scott, Hazlitt, and Charles Dickens, considered Fielding's complement and absolute co-equal (to say the least) in literary achievement. Smollett's fame, indeed, seems to have fallen upon an unprosperous curve. The coarseness of his fortunate rival is condoned, while his is condemned without appeal. Smollett's value is assessed without discrimination at that of his least worthy productions, and the historical value of his work as a prime modeller of all kinds of new literary material is overlooked. Consider for a moment as not wholly unworthy of attention his mere versatility as a man of letters. Apart from Roderick Random and its successors, which gave him a European fame, he wrote a standard history, and a standard version of Don Quixote (both of which held their ground against all comers for over a century)

Why do so many women organize against militarism and war? And why, very often, do they choose to do so in women-only groups? This original study, the product of 80,000 miles of travel by the author over a two-year period, examines womens activism against wars as far apart as Sierra Leone, Colombia and India. It shows women on different sides of conflicts in the former Yugoslavia and Israel refusing enmity, and co-operating for peace. It describes trans-national networks of women opposing US and Western European militarism and the so-called war on terror.

Lady Courths-Mahler - Vintage Love Stories: In this revival of "vintage chick-lit" there are no cell phones nor computers - but love letters that sometimes take weeks to reach their starry-eyed recipients. Suitors court their sweethearts, and gentlemen woo their ladies. Legendary German author Lady Courths-Mahler paints a portrait of magical romance, of a glimpse into the life of beautiful damsels and handsome heroes. These "fairytales for adults," from the early 1900s have been revived from the vaults and appear now for the first time in English. Their tender charm will leave your heart singing for more. - Shortly before Dick Garring and Gladys Forester travel to Germany to hire a new architect for their firm, Gladys learns that her recently deceased father had embezzled money as a young accountant from a company in Berlin. With the stolen money, he moved to California and started a debt-free life with a new identity. The loss caused the Berlin firm financial ruin, and the owner committed suicide. On their trip, Dick and Gladys hire both Hans Dernburg as their new architect, and his sister, Rose Marie, as Gladys's companion. Despite their class differences, Dick falls in love with Rose Marie, and Gladys is attracted to Hans at first sight. It isn't until they are introduced that Gladys realizes that Hans is the son of the man from whom her father had embezzled so many years earlier. She is afraid to reveal this secret to him and it threatens to destroy any chance of happiness for Gladys and Hans. - The author's story could have come from one of her novels: a real fairytale like the story of Cinderella- but she did not marry the prince, she became a queen on her own. Born Ernestine Friederike Elisabeth Mahler on February 18, 1867, in the town of Nebra a.d. Unstrut, Hedwig Courths Mahler was the product of an out-of-wedlock affair. She was raised by various foster parents. She first worked as a saleswoman in Leipzig while she wrote her f.

The Silverado Squatters (1883) is Robert Louis Stevenson's travel memoir of his two-month honeymoon trip with Fanny Vandegrift (and her son Lloyd Osbourne) to Napa Valley, California, in 1880.In July 1879, Stevenson received word that his future American wife's divorce was almost complete, but that she was seriously ill. He left Scotland right away and travelled to meet her in Monterey, California, (his trip detailed in The Amateur Emigrant (1894) and Across the Plains (1892)). Broken financially, suffering from a lifelong fibrinous bronchitis condition, and with his writing career at a dead end, he was nursed back to health by his doctor, his nurse, and his future wife, while living briefly in Monterey, San Francisco, and Oakland. His father having provided money to help, on May 19, 1880, he married the San Francisco native, whom he had first met in France in 1875, soon after the events of An Inland Voyage. Still too weak to undertake the journey back to Scotland, friends suggested Calistoga, in the upper Napa Valley, with its healthy mountain air. They first went to the Hot Springs Hotel in Calistoga, but unable to afford the 10 dollars a week, they spent an unconventional honeymoon in an abandoned three-story bunkhouse at a derelict mining camp called "Silverado" on the shoulder of Mount Saint Helena in the Mayacamas Mountains. There they managed to "squat" for two months during a pleasant California summer, putting up makeshift cloth windows and hauling water in by hand from a nearby stream while dodging rattlesnakes and the occasional fog banks so detrimental to Stevenson's health. The Silverado Squatters provides some interesting views of California during the late 19th century. Stevenson uses the first telephone of his life. He meets a number of wine growers in Napa Valley, an enterprise he deemed "experimental", with growers sometimes even mislabelling the bottles as originating from Spain in order to sell their product to sceptical Americans. He visits the ol
