Excerpt:CHAPTER XXVII TRADE AND TRANSPORTATION Probably there is no practical phase of Alaska that is so little known as that of transportation in and out of the Territory, whether it be of mail or telegram, of. passenger or freight. As illustrative of the ignorance regarding these matters may be mentioned an experience of the writer as he was about to visit Seward Peninsula. An official of high rank, looking over a map of Alaska, broached the point of what would be seen in passing through Valdez en route to Nome. He was astonished to be told that at Valdez one was a thousand miles farther from Nome than when he left Seattle. STEAMSHIP LINES The principal ocean steamships in the Alaskan trade are those of the long established Pacific Coast Company, of the vigorous Alaskan Steamship Company, and a foreign line, the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company. Service is frequent, reasonably rapid, and disasters are rare. The Pacific Coast Company plies fortnightly during winter, and weekly during summer, between Seattle and Skagway. It also runs during June, July, and August an excursion steamer to the glaciers and other points, taking only first-class round-trip passengers for the eleven-day voyage. It operates tri-monthly steamships to Nome in summer-June to September. The Alaskan Company has a weekly service between Seattle and Skagway in summer, and a twelve-day service in winter. It sends in summer a boat to Nome about every ten days. Its fleet of twelve steamships is most busily engaged in its weekly service to Prince William Sound-the voyage to Cordova taking five days, to Valdez six days, and to Seward a week. Dusty pueblos adorned with adobe houses, each with a man sitting against a wall, a large sombrero tipped over his face, heavy snoring sounds emitting from underneath that hat; barefoot Indian women and children walking through the dusty, cobbled streets. These were the first images that came to mind when Ian Middleton thought of Mexico. But was it really like that? He had read James A Michener's historical novel on Mexico, and it had portrayed a country of rich cultural diversity. These are the things that had ignited in Ian a burning desire to see this country for himself. As a novice traveller this was an extremely daring move. Especially as he would be travelling alone. Ian knew nobody in Mexico. Although he d travelled the year before for the first time in Australia, he d had the advantage of knowing people there. This would his first real trip in a foreign land completely alone. Yet as Ian was to find out, there is no such thing as being alone on the backpacker trail. The meeting of two Canadian girls soon threw him into the backpacker scene, and by the time he finally crossed the border into Mexico, was part of a small group of people all with similar intentions. The first two weeks of the journey were spent in California, which actually used to belong to Mexico before war with the US ended in Mexico ceding all of its north-western territories to the US. The idea behind the VERSE IT: ALL Bible began over coffee following a missed trip to church. We were new in town and visiting different churches looking for our niche. Traveling from church to church, Sunday after Sunday, we noticed something interesting. Many parishioners followed along with the sermon, not from the hardcover Bible in the pews, but rather on their phones or tablets. One Sunday, we decided to download a free Bible for our eReader. We were running late and did not review the Bible before leaving for church. Upon arrival, we discovered the service was moved up an hour. So instead, we decided to grab some coffee and read a verse or two on our own. We took our seats at a local coffee house, turned on our eReader, and were immediately surprised at how hard it was to find anything. The free download was hard to navigate, hard to search, just plain hard to use. If we had tried to use it during a service we would still be searching long after coffee and donuts concluded. As eBook designers, we decided to build a better product for ourselves and others. Ian was more than a little apprehensive when his turn came to kiss the Blarney Stone. Not only had they just met, but it seemed this stone wasn't at all fussy as to who it allowed to kiss it. Kissing the Blarney Stone is Ireland's third most popular tourist attraction, so as well as the moral implications there were the hygienic implications too. Yet kissing the Blarney Stone is reputed to bestow upon you the Irish gift of the gab, a talent Ian would need if he was to seduce the Sisters of Murphy's; assuming he ever finds them. This was just the first obstacle Ian had to cross during his two-month journey around the Emerald Isle. With just a backpack as a home, a guidebook in one hand, a bizarre travelogue in the other and very little money in his bank account, he leaves his home and sets off to this little country that has always been his neighbour, yet overlooked by him for many years as he pursued dreams to travel to far and exotic countries. But to Ian's surprise he was to find that he didn't need to travel thousands of miles across the world to discover something new and exciting. Little Alfie of the Baker Street Irregulars seeks the help of Holmes and Watson as his cousin Flora has been arrested and accused of a double murder. The investigation gets underway with a trip to the scene of the crime. Holmes is suspicious and, together with Watson, he travels incognito to The Imperial Gasworks. Their visit is both informative and productive involving a little deception and some slight of hand by Watson to obtain some Rattle-Jacks. The postmortem confirms Holmes suspicions but he now has to gather sufficient evidence to convince the Coroner and the jury that this is not in fact a case of murder.

Rajilad, the brilliant engineer from Pimglammam succeeds in creating a time-warp to the past. In order to calibrate the dial of the time warp, she travels into the past with Kieran and Rikki, to find out the date. Not knowing where in time they will wind up, they face unexpected problems and dangers. On one of the trips, they encounter a teen age, homeless ex-slave boy who is being beaten. They bring him to the present to educate him and send him back to be productive. Cran Jelek, Rajilad's nemesis brings her back to Pimglammam by force and keeps her under house arrest. The Cummerfords and Aguntints engage in a rescue attempt planned by Vimar, Rajilad's friend and former supervisor.
