A frank, funny, and insightful account of an Australian family's new life in Paris When Australian Jane Paech moves to Paris, her visions of afternoons in bijou bistros and bookshops on the Left Bank are kept in check by the needs of a young family and a long to-do list that includes apartment-hunting, school selection, and multiple trips to IKEA. Through a collection of sharp observations, insightful travel articles, and laugh-out-loud anecdotes, A Family in Paris conveys the joys and difficulties of living in this most famous of cities. It introduces us to the Parisians and their eccentricities, explores the intricate rituals of daily life, and takes us beyond the well-trodden tourist sites to the best eating spots, boutiques, museums, and markets that only a local could know about. Frank, intimate, and beautifully photographed, A Family in Paris is about making a home in a strange land, finding a community, and discovering the joy of renewal.

The Pocket Rough Guide to Hong Kong and Macau celebrates the energy of these two former European colonies, sitting just 37 miles apart on the south China coast. This fully updated guidebook includes the lowdown on the shopping opportunities and cutting-edge architecture of Hong Kong's downtown, parks, and harborside cityscapes? all existing alongside traditional temples and street markets. Go further afield to appreciate the beaches, rural landscapes, and old walled villages of the New Territories, easy to reach in even a short visit, but often overlooked. Across the Pearl River, and close enough for day trips, Macau's eighteenth-century churches and lanes incongruously rub shoulders with ostentatious casinos. The Pocket Rough Guide to Hong Kong and Macau features inspirational photography and detailed, reliable maps that show you the best of the region. There are up-to-the-minute reviews of the region's dining and entertainment, too, from indigenous Macanese cuisine and the best places for traditional dim sum, to Lan Kwai Fong's bars and which old colonial hotels serve afternoon tea. The Pocket Rough Guide Hong Kong and Macau is your essential guide to Hong Kong, with information on all the key sights in an easy-to-use, pocket-size format and a full-color, pull-out map.

The long and the short about "The Long and the short:"Entering any story for the first time is like walking through a doorway into a place you never knew existed. No matter its length, the world of the short story - when done right - provides a traveler with a visit that feels too short, though is really just right. Inside this book you'll visit old farms, suburban homes, laboratories of the future, familiar neighborhoods just like the one where your funny aunt lives. You'll walk the hot fields of the deep south, frozen cabins in the far north, the war-torn deserts of Iraq and the cool shadows of Venice. Audio Mixer: Mike Mogis. Recording information: ARC, Omaha, NE; Shangri-La Studio, Malibu, CA; Type Foundry, Portland, OR. Photographer: Butch Hogan. When M. Ward, Mike Mogis, Jim James, and Conor Oberst announced plans to record together, fans were quick to link the supergroup to the Traveling Wilburys, who blazed a similarly star-studded path 20 years prior. Truth be told, Monsters of Folk's emphasis on harmony vocals and atmospheric arrangements has just as much in common with the work of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, even if the political concerns that grounded the latter group are largely absent here. Instead, the self-titled MONSTERS OF FOLK tackles religion, nature, love, and lust, with all four songwriters sharing vocals and songwriting duties. Mogis, who rose to prominence by playing a central but somewhat surreptitious role in Bright Eyes, receives slightly less screen time than the others, preferring instead to remain behind the scenes as producer and sideman. Even so, his guitar solo during "Say Please" is one of the album's loudest, rawest moments, and his production helps draw connections between the album's slew of songwriting styles and genres. "Folk" is defined broadly here, as the album encompasses everything from trip-hop to roots-rock to homely, homespun pop. Spread over fifteen tracks, the combination wears thin at several points, and several songs feel more like their creator's solo work than a composite product. MONSTERS OF FOLK has moments on undeniable beauty, though, and when the musicians pitch their voices atop one another-as they do to notable effect on the gorgeous "Slow Down Jo"-the benefits of teamwork are more than clear.

Personnel: Chris Goss, Josh Homme (guitar); Philip Shepherd (cello, electric cello); Richard File (piano, organ, synthesizer, programming); Cosmic (keyboards); James Book (bass guitar, programming); Dave Henderson (drums); Pablo Clements (programming, background vocals); Chris Allen (programming); Aidan Lavelle, James Lavelle, Soul Children of Chicago (background vocals).Additional personnel: Graham Burris (vocals); Sarah Green, Matthew Santos, Gemstones, Bishop G, Nikki Jean, Pooh Bear, Snoop Dogg, UNKLE. Building on the success of his acclaimed debut, FOOD & LIQUOR, Chi-town representative Lupe Fiasco returns with a concept-themed record, THE COOL. Evenly balancing intelligent lyricism, poetic symbolism, and catchy pop-themed production, Lupe's sophomore effort partially follows the story of the ghetto Everyman, the Cool, in his ever-changing relationship with the Streets and the Game. Still, it's not all high-concept here. Lupe also celebrates the spoils of superstar glamour on the catchy single, "Superstar," and the travel-fantasy track, "Paris, Tokyo," and enters more experimental territory with the help of British trip-hop act, U.N.K.L.E. on "Hello/Goodbye (Uncool)." THE COOL features production work from Soundtrakk, Chris & Drop, Patrick Stump, and Chris Goss, among others, as well as guest appearances by Sarah Green, GemStones, Pooh Bear, Nikki Jean, Bishop G, Graham Burris, Unkle, Matthew Santos, and Snoop Dogg.

Personnel: DJ Quik (keyboards, drums, drum machine, programming).Editor: DJ Quik. Photographer: Jorge Peniche. While his only worthy contemporary, Dr. Dre, continued to tease with leaked tracks and missed release dates, West Coast rapper/producer DJ Quik kept banging them out, releasing The Book of David just two years after his collaboration with Kurupt, BlaQKout. In the world of G-funk, that's an incredibly quick turnaround, which is the unreasonable reason Quik's releases are undervalued by any but the West Coast faithful. Shame really, since The Book of David is as well-crafted and vital release that can stand toe to toe with the 2011 competition, coming at the listener as cocksure as Jeezy or T.I. at times (check the truly vicious "Ghetto Rendezvous" for proof) while giving up some lighter numbers the Stones Throw or alt-rap crowd could hang with (best example, "Luv of My Live" with Detroit's Gift Reynolds on the mike). There's something for every thug in these Zapp and Parliament-influenced productions, along with some envelope-pushing moments, like the analog mysticism of the Bizzy Bone feature "Babylon," or the stern sounds of "Poppin'," which come off as a bizarre, time travel blend of West Coast and Weimer Republic. Quik's fans get plenty of his Eazy-E like insults ("Your hair is falling out, my hair is growing in/I put my hair in curls, and put yours in the garbage bin") and unnamed targets to guess at, plus with Kurupt, Bun B, Ice Cube, and even Suga Free on board, the guest list reads like an elder statesmen's summit. Top it off with a closer from the late P-Funk guitarist Garry Shider, and the old school's heart is on fire, but The Book of David is no nostalgia trip. This is Quik in top form and pointed at the future, ignoring all fads and focused on what is real. ~ David Jeffries

Audio Mixers: Chris Boerner; Phonte; Nicolay. Recording information: Sound Pure Studios, Durham, NC; The Beach House, Wilmington, NC; The Burlap Palace, Raleigh, NC; The Peanut Gallery. The Foreign Exchange family's third 2010 release, following YahZarah's The Ballad of Purple St. James and Zo!'s SunStorm, Authenticity is the third proper album from the flagship act helmed by Nicolay and Phonte. It's somehow more lush and downcast than 2008's Leave It All Behind, frequently dipping into an alluring type of despondent heartache that is improbably soothing. Opening with an eerie intro similar to that of the Grammy-nominated "Daykeeper," Authenticity promptly gets to the black heart of the matter: "Loved you good, and you wrote our heartbreak in the sky." Phonte, whose singing voice is equally resigned and penetrating, lets loose a torrent of Hear, My Dear-worthy bombs, like "Love is at worst an excuse/At best it's a truce/So what is the use?" The song's tremulous, synthesizer-laced production would have fit on Nicolay's City Lights, Vol. 2: Shibuya, had Nicolay experienced a crippling loss during the trip that inspired that album. The following slow-motion title track, rhythmically resembling warped Purple Rain-era Prince, furthers the album's theme of pouring everything into a relationship despite being aware of the futility. Here, Phonte is in full soul-baring confession mode: "She's all that I could dream, but she tears me apart." A couple significant songs detour from bad-lover territory, though they could be re-sequenced to seem more like chronological scenes from a relationship in gradual decay. "Maybe She'll Dream of Me," sweet and percolating, is a light song in the best sense, but in the context of all the heartache, one gets the overriding notion that it's more about pursuing something that could only be too good to be true. "Make Me a Fool," as in "I'm not asking you to be an angel/Just don't ever make me a fool," seems to sense the inevitable in spite of its guard dropping. More moody, modern R & B that sou

Glacias (background vocals).Originally released on Bulk (902) in 1996.Personnel: Kool Keith (vocals); Andy Boy, Phil Bright (guitar); DJ Q-Bert (scratches).DJ: DJ Q-Bert. Audio Mixer: Automater. Recording information: Glue Factory. Illustrator: Pushead. It's hard to exaggerate the role that Kool Keith's debut solo album as Dr. Octagon played in revitalizing underground hip-hop. It certainly didn't bring the scene back to life single-handedly, but it attracted more attention than any non-mainstream rap album in quite a while, thanks to its inventive production and Keith's bizarre, free-associative rhymes. Dr. Octagon represented the first truly new, genuine alternative to commercial hip-hop since the Native Tongues' heyday. It appealed strongly to alternative audiences who'd grown up with rap music, but simply hadn't related to it since the rise of gangsta. Moreover, it predated seminal releases by Company Flow, Black Star, and the Jurassic 5, helping those groups get the attention they deserved, and reinvented Keith as a leader of the new subterranean movement. As if that weren't enough, the album launched the career of Dan the Automator, one of the new underground's brightest producers, and shed some light on the burgeoning turntablist revival via the scratching fireworks of DJ Q-Bert. The Automator's futuristic, horror-soundtrack production seemed to bridge the gap between hip-hop and the more electronic-oriented trip-hop (which has since narrowed even more), and it's creepily effective support for Keith's crazed alter ego. Dr. Octagon is an incompetent, time-traveling, possibly extraterrestrial surgeon who pretends to be a female gynecologist and molests his patients and nurses. The concept makes for some undeniably juvenile (and, arguably, hilarious) moments, but the real focus is Keith's astounding wordplay; i

They finally agree to spend six months apart; if they still love each other at the end of that time, they will reunite at the top of the Empire State Building. But the path of true love does not always run smooth, and tragedy threatens to tear the couple apart. Leo McCarey directed both the original (LOVE AFFAIR) and this remake, and viewers often amiably battle over which film is the more touching. Music and Coexistence: A Journey across the World in Search of Musicians Making a Difference is both study and travelogue, as author Osseily Hanna explores the courageous work of musicians who compose and perform with their ostensible enemies or in extraordinary social situations. He documents the political and economic constraints faced by musicians, from the wall that encloses a refugee camp in Jerusalem, to the tensions among KFOR and Carabinieri peacekeepers who keep Serbs and Kosovar Albanians apart, to the cultural and linguistic suppression that afflicts minority communities in Turkey. A multilingual musician, Hanna examines the lives of the individuals and groups at the forefront of the effort to bridge ethnic, cultural, and religious divisions. Featuring musicians from thirteen different countries and territories across five continents, Hanna's story includes a remarkable cadre of performers, such as the musicians who comprise Heartbeat, a group of Israeli and Palestinian youth, who compose, record, and perform music together; the Albino musicians of Tanzania, who regularly combat persecution by local shamans; the multiracial and thriving samba musicians in Sao Paolo; and a former child soldier from Cambodia who seeks to revive traditional music following the genocide in the 1970s. With photos taken by the author during his travels, this work is a unique contribution for those interested in world music and peace studies. This unique and remarkable work will open the eyes and the hearts of every musician and music lover who recognizes music as a universal language. Quality designer resin construction. Finished in faux bronze. Weighs 5 pounds. Overall dimensions: 5.5L x 3.5W x 6H inches. About Design ToscanoDesign Toscano is the country's premier source for statues and other historical and antique replicas, which are available through the company's catalog and website. Design Toscano's founders, Michael and Marilyn Stopka, created Design Toscano in 1990. While on a trip to Paris, the Stopkas first saw the marvelous carvings of gargoyles and water spouts at the Notre Dame Cathedral. Inspired by the beauty and mystery of these pieces, they decided to introduce the world of medieval gargoyles to America in 1993. On a later trip to Albi, France, the Stopkas had the pleasure of being exposed to the world of Jacquard tapestries that they added quickly to the growing catalog. Since then, the company's product line has grown to include Egyptian, Medieval and other period pieces that are now among the current favorites of Design Toscano customers, along with an extensive collection of garden fountains, statuary, authentic canvas replicas of oil painting masterpieces, and other antique art reproductions. At Design Toscano, attention to detail is important. Travel directly to the source for all historical replicas ensures brilliant design.
