Aux Merveilleux de Fred. I didn't think I cared about meringue, but these are amazing.

crêpe, caramel au beurre salé maison (with baked apple and vanilla ice cream) at West Country Girl. Delicious, friendly service. You should probably reserve.

Tarte Chiboust à la poire - Maison Pichard - Paris, Boulangerie et Pâtisserie Pichard 88 Rue Cambronne 75015 Paris Métro Vaugirard, closed Mon & Tues during lunch. I'd put this in the "if you're in the neighborhood" category. Very reasonable prices.

Le Meurice by Alain Ducasse, 228 rue de Rivoli, If you can afford 380 euros for a five-course tasting menu, by all means, go (and take me with you, because I'm recommending this purely based on reputation, not experience).

The best religieuses according to Figaro. My favorite is Marletti (No. 3 on their list—not the one pictured)

La praluline de Pralus (35, rue Ramuteau). I'd be lying if I said I haven't bought one, stuffed it in my camera bag, and snacked on it while wandering around. (could be really decadent in bread pudding or French toast).

Hugo & Victor. Best packaging ever (the photo doesn't do it justice). Chocolates in a box that looks like a Moleskine notebook, complete with black elastic band to keep it closed. I bought it just for the packaging. Eating all of the chocolate within an hour, well, that was just a bonus.

Grom gelato. 81, rue de Seine. If you're in the area and want a quick meal, get a sandwich at Cosi and then walk to Grom for some quality gelato. There's an amorino around the corner, but there's an amorino on every corner, so don't go there when you can get Grom.

Chez l'ami Jean 27, Rue Malar 75007 Paris, France Tel: +33 (01) 4705 8689 Website: www.amijean.eu/... I once heard a woman say that she would crawl on her hands and knees just to eat their riz au lait. Of course, she practically lived next door, so... Still, if you like basque cuisine (I'm indifferent) and/or you want to taste rice pudding at its most transcendent (keep in mind that it can't transcend the fact that it is still rice pudding).

Paris Cheat Sheet via Travels with Clara. I'm usually skeptical about these kinds of posts, but I actually agree with almost all the suggestions for places to go with kids, shop, and eat. Skip the Berthillon ice cream, however. It's waaaayyy overrated.

Café Vavin 18 Rue Vavin, 75006 Paris, France I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here, but if you're on the rue Vavin side of the Jardin du Luxembourg, it's a good place for a salad or something.

If you're on the boulevard du Montparnasse, look for this crêpe stand. You won't be disappointed.

Le Nôtre Feuille d'Automne is my favorite for special occasions (make sure you get a container of crème anglaise to serve with it)

L'as du fallafel is the must-eat fallafel. A nice change of pace from baguette sandwiches.

Cosi in Paris is the best. My favorite made-to-order sandwich is roast beef, bleu d'Auvergne, and caramelized onions drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with chives.
