To be launched in conjunction with an exhibition at Orleans House in Twickenham in August 2013, a film and live music events. Have you heard about Eel Pie Island? The home of the British Beat explosion? Anyone with an interest in the history of UK rock n'roll is familiar with The Cavern Club and the role that Merseyside played in the story of the British Beat scene. But on a far less-celebrated but no less significant path, over a small bridge onto an island in the middle of the Thames, another great 60s club night played host to acts that would later make a global name for themselves. THE ROLLING STONES, THE WHO, PINK FLOYD, THE SMALL FACES, DAVID BOWIE, THE KINKS and THE YARDBIRDS are amongst the many acts who performed at the legendary Eel Pie Hotel during its 50s and 60s heyday, as did jazz greats like KEN COLYER, KENNY BALL and ACKER BILK as well as more avant-garde performers like IVOR CUTLER. But how did The Eel Pie Club become such a popular venue? What motivated its founder, Arthur Chisnall to create a space where young people could enjoy the music they wanted to, in an environment free from the usual constraints Why has this thriving West London scene been omitted from rock history when its influence has spread far and wide? Recently, bands like THE MYSTERY JETS have paid homage to Arthur Chisnall's fabulous club, playing gigs on the island that launched careers and cemented rock's infamous relationships. The latest incarnation of the EEL PIE CLUB is alive and well. This book traces the origins of a scene that is long overdue for recognition.

Celebrating the celebration of the Old West In the 1880s, there wasn't much in Anson, Texas, in the way of entertainment for the area's cowhands. But Star Hotel operator M.G. Rhodes changed that when he hosted a Grand Ball the weekend before Christmas. A restless traveling salesman, rancher, and poet from New York named William Lawrence Chittenden, a guest at the Star Hotel, was so impressed with the soiree that he penned his observances in the poem "The Cowboys' Christmas Ball." Reenacted annually since 1934 based on Chittenden's poem, the contemporary dances attract people from coast to coast, from Canada, and from across Europe and elsewhere. Since 1993 Grammy Award-winning musical artist Michael Martin Murphey has played at the popular event. Far more than a history of the Jones County dance, Paul Carlson analyzes the long poem, defining the many people and events mentioned and explaining the Jones County landscape Chittenden lays out in his celebrated work. The book covers the evolution of cowboy poetry and places Chittenden and his poem chronologically within the ever-changing western genre. Dancin' in Anson: A History of the Texas Cowboys' Christmas Ball is a novel but refreshing look at a cowboy poet, his poem, and a joyous Christmas-time family event that traces its roots back nearly 130 years.

From Vienna's old town to the outer districts, from the city's charming, eclectic neighborhoods to Danube Island, National Geographic Traveler: Vienna guides you to the better- and lesser-known sights of one of Europe's most popular cities. In between, you'll discover the cultural and natural treasures Vienna has to offer-including its palaces and architectural gems, local markets and events, and the beautiful parks and gardens throughout the city. Among the special features of National Geographic Traveler: Vienna are sidebars detailing experiences throughout the city, to make sure that you get to know the culture, and the people, inside and out. You can learn to make traditional Viennese fare (think schnitzel and apple strudel), for example, sip wine across the Danube in Stammersdorf, and celebrate the holidays with a trip to Vienna's world-famous Christmas markets. Insider tips, in addition, provided by an array of National Geographic experts-photographers, writers, and grantees who have spent significant time in Vienna-direct you to favorite restaurants, festivals, and other information that only locals know. Guided walks and drives are always a popular feature in our guides, and in National Geographic Traveler: Vienna, these include hiking the Kahlenberg for an unforgettable view of the city, strolling along Vienna's back streets, and walking through the forests and meadows of the Prater. To top it off, an extensive Travelwise section at the back of the guide provides hand-picked hotels and restaurants, tour recommendations, and a glossary that covers must-know words.
