Located about 5 hours west of Nairobi, Masai Mara is Kenya's greatest park. The Mara is an extension of the Serengeti and covers over 1500sqkm. It contains a staggering amount of game especially during the annual wildebeest migration. There are no fences around the reserves in Kenya and Tanzania allowing the animals to roam freely in search of new grasses for grazing. The wildebeest migration is one of the few large movements of game in the world. The wildebeest give birth to their calves in the South East Serengeti then move into the Western Serengeti before heading north to Masai Mara in July. They feed on the lush grasses of the Mara until October as the Serengeti plains are too dry. In December, the rains return to the Serengeti as does the migration. There are 1.3 million wildebeest; 200,000 zebra; and 350,000 gazelles estimated in the migration. Of course all the lions follow these animals making the Mara the most predator-packed reserve in the world. Cheetahs are very difficult to see in most African parks, but they are very easily seen here. Wildebeest can't pass up the opportunity to drink as they cannot go longer than 5 days without water. They will risk life and limb to do so. In the morning they might cross the croc- infested river only to re-cross the same river later in the afternoon. We camped for 16 days in the park at a community run Masai camp near Talek gate. We can't wait to do it again!

Christchurch, New Zealand was rocked by 2 massive earthquakes within 6 months. The first rocked on Saturday 4 Sept 2010 at 4.35am and struck just outside of Chch measuring 7.1M and caused widespread damage. Fortunately there were no fatalities. Then after close to 5000 aftershocks on Tuesday 22 Feb 2011 at 12.51pm the worst possible happened. The city was again rocked with another huge quake measuring 6.3M and it was center just 10k from the city at a depth of only 5km! This time there were numerous deaths. The total stands at 166 and counting. There is still many many more missing in rubble and bodies to yet be recovered. A charity match in called "Filled the Basin" in Wellington for the Christchurch earthquake appeal was organised by Ex-NZ captain Stephen Fleming and he joined many other celebrities and ex players to play in this match on Sunday 13 Mach 2011. In one over Fujitsu offered 100kNZD if PM John Key could hit a single 4 off Spin King Shane Warne. In which he did, infact he hit 3! and one was inches from being a 6. Amazing game of cricket which raised over $500k for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal

Armed Guards Protect Rare Rhinos in Kenya - as part of the news series by GeoBeats. Rhinos in a Kenyan nature conservancy are under 24 hour armed guard. The Rhino is an extremely endangered species that continues to be under threat. Poachers are after the rhino's horn, which is used in traditional Asian medicine, though it is reported to have no medicinal value. At the nature conservancy there is a group of 126 rangers and a 30 man anti poaching team, one of whom is a former poacher. Penalties for poaching do not reflect the seriousness of the crime, and according to conservationist Ian Craig, they "date back to 1973, but in 1973 Kenya would have had 10 thousand to 15 thousand rhinos, and now we have 600." Although Rhinos continue to be threatened by extinction, there is hope. According to the Telegraph: "The population of the southern white rhino was down to 30 at the beginning of the 20th century. It is now more than 20 thousand" The Vietnamese subspecies of Javan Rhino was declared extinct in October of 2011, but on the island of Java, Indonesia there are 35 members of this species remaining. There is a sanctuary for rhinos that is policed with 160 video surveillance cameras and has been patrolled by armed guards since 1998
