Click here to watch "Snake Island" now: http://www.vice.com/the-vice-report/snake-island-part-1 The highest concentration of one of the most venomous snakes in the world is located about 90 miles off the coast of Santos, Brazil, on a small, craggy chunk of otherwise uninhabitable land. It's known as Ilha da Queimada Grande, or Snake Island, and it's the only place you will find 2,000 or so of the wholly unique golden lancehead viper, or Bothrops insularis. When you step ashore, with a keen eye you spot one of these snakes roughly every 10 to 15 minutes after clearing the base of the island, and as many as one every six square yards in other parts of the island. This means, as you are walking through the waist-high brush, even with some good boots on, it's like walking through a minefield that moves and, instead of blowing you into chunks, slowly paralyzes you and liquefies your insides, as the golden lancehead does to the migrating birds it feeds on in the treetops. Well, "liquefying your insides" may be a stretch, but no one knows for sure because no one bitten has lived long enough even to be admitted to a hospital, or at least none of the researchers who accompanied VICE on their journey to Snake Island owned up to that fact. Nor did the Brazilian Navy, who allowed VICE exclusive access to document their annual maintenance inspection of Snake Island's lighthouse—which has been automated ever since the 1920s, after the old lighthouse keeper ran out of food and disappeared while picking wild bananas in a small grove near the shore. According to legend, he and the members of his rescue party died one by one, all alone and in search of one another after each had been missing for some time. The golden lancehead is so unique and its venom so potent that specimens procured by snake-smuggling "biopirates" can fetch up to $30,000 apiece on the black market (with prices going much higher depending on the location of the rich weirdo snake collector or, some have speculated, the black-market biopharmaceutical chemists attempting to beat Brazil on a patent). Is that the craziest fucking description of a documentary you've ever heard? The answer is yes. So of course VICE's editor-in-chief, Rocco Castoro, and senior producer, Jackson Fager, had to go there and nose around for themselves. On their return they said things like: "It was like a David Lynch movie through the prism of Satan's asshole. The anti-Galápagos. Darwin in reverse." "[It's] cut off from the mainland and perhaps the land of a long-buried pirate treasure, according to the stories from local fishermen. But they also told us there were aliens on the island, so pretty much anything goes. It's scorched earth. It's where I would send my worst enemies to live, and I look forward to setting up a business with the Brazilian government to do just that. After the World Cup, of course." "What I can tell you is that there are stone fucking steps hand-carved into the face of one of the prominent cliffs, all the way up. But you can't dock anywhere near there. There's also the possibility that [the venom] could be used for an anti-cancer drug, or perhaps anti-aging. Maybe it could save mankind. Whatever. They wouldn't have saved my ass." "There are blue locusts and so many of these weird, prehistoric-looking cockroaches on the ground at night that it crunches when you walk. Place is fucked. No one is allowed there for a reason. Don't ever go." "All that said, great shoot. Great diving, too." A land of a thousand faces. Human faces, and faces of nature. Located in southern Brazil between the states of Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina is not easily defined. This small Brazilian state, with a little more than 6 million residents, unites within its unique 95 thousand km2 a diversity of scenery and people that marvels visitors. From white sand beaches, tropical forests and snowy mountains to Azorean fishermen, Italian farmers, and German industrialists, this is a land of beautiful, sharp and fascinating contrasts. These contrasts are also found in the economy. A strong agriculture, based on small farms, shares space with an active industrial park, the fourth largest in Brazil. Large companies and thousands of small businesses are spread across the state, linked to consumer centers and ports by an efficient highway grid. These roads also boost tourism, a natural vocation of this small state, now the nation's third largest tourist center. The balance and dynamism of the Santa Catarina economy are reflected in high levels of growth, literacy, employment and per capita income that are much above the national average. These numbers surprise and complement the fascinating profile of one of the most productive and beautiful Brazilian states. **Watch in HD and FULL SCREEN** Footage from the Argentinian side of the Iguazu (Iguaçu Falls) during a December 2010 visit. The falls are one of the most spectacular places I've ever seen. Massive waterfalls that emerge from the jungle their beauty and presence is unparalleled. From Wikipedia: The waterfall system consists of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometres (1.7 mi) of the Iguazu River. Some of the individual falls are up to 82 metres (269 ft) in height, though the majority are about 64 metres (210 ft). The Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo in Spanish or Garganta do Diabo in Portuguese), a U-shaped, 82-meter-high, 150-meter-wide and 700-meter-long (490 by 2300 feet) cataract, is the most impressive of all, and marks the border between Argentina and Brazil. The Argentine side comprises three sections: the upper falls, the lower falls, and the Devil's Throat. If you'd like to learn more about the falls and my trip, please visit http://virtualwayfarer.com. Thank you for watching, and please subscribe! Footage was shot on a Vixia HF200

Graduated in Business Administration from the University of São Paulo, and having a master's degree in Computer Science from George Washington University, as well as a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Education at Yale and Northwestern. In this talk he tells us that whenever we embark on adventures, whether through travel, learning a new language, explore a different culture, it can open the people's minds, it can transform us. By using some personal adventures to illustrate what he wants to say Enio describes a kind of transformation, which is very important, that happens when we learn to choose how we will interpret the experiences we have. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations) TEDxESPM - 09/29/11 - Sao Paulo - Brasil Enio Ohmaye é CXO (Chief Experience Officer) da EF, responde pelo desenvolvimento e inovação de produtos na empresa. Continue to part 2/2 here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bssMiHhqJ-Y Back in October 2012, we covered a protest staged by the Free Pass Movement (abbreviated as MPL in Portuguese) for the National Free Fare Fight Day in São Paulo, Brazil. Earlier this year, we aired a documentary about the first round of demonstrations, where the MPL warned it was going to bring São Paulo to a halt. Demonstrations this past June started up again after the bus fare went up R$ 0.20 (eight cents) in the city. For a protest called by the MPL on June 6, 2013, thousands of people joined in. Things got out of control after the police reacted to demonstrators who blocked the 23 de Maio Avenue, a major highway in the city. Not really understanding what had happened, a lot of people called the whole movement a group of punks; "vandals" and "troublemakers" were the most common adjectives used to describe the MPL. Trying to use the publicity to become stronger and pressure even more the state and city administrations, the MPL promptly called for a another demonstration. For the next protest, on June 11, a small crowd marched in heavy rain from Paulista Avenue to downtown. São Paulo had been brought to a halt for sure, and the fare would have to go down. Or, so the MPL thought. But Governor Geraldo Alckmin and Mayor Fernando Haddad still refused to negotiate transportation-fare reductions. On the contrary, Alckmin told the police to be even tougher on the protesters. Which brings us to the fateful protest on June 13. While the mainstream media in Brazil continued to call for more violence against demonstrators, more people than ever joined the protest in front of the Municipal Theater. While going up Consolação Street, the masses had to stop, as they were blocked by the police. Before they could negotiate their route, the police hit hard with rubber bullets and tear gas. Officers cornered everyone, arresting tons of people, and shooting rubber bullets aimlessly. Dozens were hurt, including people who were just passing by. Among the injured were more than 20 journalists from different outlets who were just doing their job. The police's brutal reaction was widely documented and helped turn around public opinion about the movement.
