Ian was more than a little apprehensive when his turn came to kiss the Blarney Stone. Not only had they just met, but it seemed this stone wasn't at all fussy as to who it allowed to kiss it. With just a backpack as a home, a guidebook in one hand, a bizarre travelogue in the other and very little money in his bank account, he leaves his home and sets off to this little country that has always been his neighbour, yet overlooked by him for many years as he pursued dreams to travel to far and exotic countries. An Indian Summer of Steam' is the second volume of David Maidment's 'railway' autobiography, following his first book 'A Privileged Journey', published in xxxx. David was a railway enthusiast who made the hobby his career. After management training on the Western Region, between 1961 and 1964, he became a stationmaster in a Welsh Valley, an Area Manager on the Cardiff - Swansea main line and radiating valleys, the South Wales Train Planning Officer, the Head of Productivity Services for the Western Region and subsequently the British Railways Board, before four years from 1982 as Chief Operating Manager of the London Midland Region, the BRB's first Quality & Reliability Manager in 1986, and finally British Rail's Head of Safety Policy after the Clapham Junction train accident, until privatisation. rn This experience led to a number of years as an international railway safety consultant, and, as a result of an encounter on an Indian railway station during a business trip abroad, to found the 'Railway Children' charity to support street children living on the rail and bus stations of India, East Africa and the UK, described in 2012 by an officer of the United Nations Human Rights Commission as the largest charity in the world working exclusively for street children. Latin rhythms, 70s grooves and urban cool jazz encase smooth vocals and are topped off by the band leader's cello on a techno trip. Stephan Braun defines a broad style terrain with nine of his own compositions. The force behind the wealth of his inventive playing techniques easily puts the cello on par with jazz's more traditional lead instruments. All three members of the young Stephan Braun Trio can boast of having completed their studies at a German college of music. However, this is just one aspect of their respective professional histories. Drummer Bodek Janke, born in 1979 in Warsaw, is strongly influenced by his Polish-Kazakh-Russian roots. His learning to play the Indian tabla percussion instrument, work with internationally acclaimed jazz greats and current residence in New York are all factors that contribute to this picture of a shimmering, versatile musical personage. Also a Poland native is pianist Matth us Winnitzki whose heart belongs to Afro-Cuban music. With Hamburg as his adoptive home, it is no wonder that this founder of several bands and owner of his own label (brennt rekords) can mostly be heard in Latin Jazz ensembles. In the middle of his classical studies, Stephan Braun ultimately decided to pursue training in jazz whereby his concentration on groove techniques on the cello earned him not only his degree, but also several distinctions setting him apart from the rest.
