Today's feature adventure travel video is of a ferry boat boat ride we took from Macau to Hong Kong, China via HydroFoil TurboJet. I was excited to take Audrey on this particular HyrdroFoil ferry - a journey that I had completed several years ago when visiting Hong Kong and Macau. Growing up on Vancouver Island, I quite often took BC Ferries from either Nanaimo or Victoria to reach Vancouver. Thus, I've always associated ferries as a means of going somewhere exciting and new. A hydrofoil, is a foil which operates in water referring to a wing-like structure mounted on struts below the hull lifting the craft above the water during forward motion. Once the watercraft has reached a decent cruising speed, the hydrofoil elements below the hull propel it right out of the water allowing the boat to increase its speed and fuel efficiency. Taking TurboJet was literally the fastest boat I've ever been on reaching a top speed of 83 kilometers an hour. Unfortunately the speed and constant swaying back and forth of the watercraft caused Audrey to feel sick to her stomach. As a general cure all, we ordered some Korean Shin Ramyun noodles and orange juice as a remedy. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate as much as we would have liked as we experienced rain and fog for most of the journey; it cleared up slightly as we arrived in Hong Kong. The journey itself was less than an hour; typically, we're used to half or full day excursions to get from one place to the next, so this was a welcome change. We passed a lot of other vessels along the way - both large and small watercrafts - although the reduced visibility due to the weather meant we likely didn't spot as many as we would have had it been a sunny day. Overall, the journey was pleasant and expedient, as we arrived in Hong Kong earlier than expected given that we were able to board one hour earlier going on standby. Taking TurboJet is the best way to get from Macau to Hong Kong (or vice versa) given the frequency of departures, length of journey and overall cost. Our economy tickets cost only $148 Hong Kong dollars (19.08) which we felt represented a very fair price. One can just show up at the terminal and book a ticket on the spot (which should be no problem except for on weekend or holidays) or book in advance directly from the website - with the option of going on standby if you arrive earlier than your pre-purchased ticket: http://nomadicsamuel.com/video-blog/turbojet-hydrofoil-macau-hong-kong This is part of our Travel in China series. Taking a Sampan Boat Tour around Aberdeen in the South China Sea of Hong Kong, China (舢舨 - 香港仔 - 香港) So today we're doing a Sampan boat tour in an area known as Aberdeen outside of central Hong Kong. This is an area that is home to the Tangka people or the boat people who actually live aboard these little ships, so it'll be an interesting outing. And there are over six hundred junk boats still in this area. Some of them enjoy modern amenities such as internet and tv. Background music playing. Tourism in Hong Kong. This is part of our Travel in China series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chinese culture, Chinese arts, Chinese foods, Chinese religion and Chinese people. Chinese Junk boat ride at night during a A Symphony of Lights light & laser show in Hong Kong, China. There are a few cities that I have visited that offer as many attractions at night as in Hong Kong. Off of the top of my head I can only think of Singapore, Seoul and Shanghai as others that can compete. Having crossed from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island numerous times - by Star Ferry - during the day, we jumped at the opportunity to take a night cruise around the harbor at night. Boarding a Junk Boat at night offered a more intimate setting to witness the Hong Kong skyline and a Symphony of Lights performance and laser show. With cocktail in hand, we tried our best to take it all in. It is moments like these where we have to pinch ourselves as we're reminded how lucky we are to be traveling the world. Well, we made it to Hong Kong and tonight we're going to be taking a fun tour around the harbor where we're going to see some amazing views of the Hong Kong skyline. I've got my glass of wine. White wine and I'm ready to enjoy the views. Every night here in Hong Kong there is a Symphony of Lights show that starts at eight o'clock and it's really spectacular. All of the buildings light up and there is these lasers that are shooting off and music. It's not to be missed. We had a great time on the Aqua Luna. It was awesome to see all of the different sights and the buildings all lit up with the light show and we got to enjoy that with a nice glass of wine. It was my first time in Hong Kong and I thought the views were unbeatable so I definitely recommend it if you're in the city. This is part of our Travel in Hong Kong series. Star Ferry boat ride across Victoria Harbor from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island, China (天星小輪) There are many ways to get around Hong Kong. This is the Star Ferry. It's super convenient. It's a boat that comes by roughly every seven minutes. It's really cheap. You just hop on and it takes you from Kowloon to Hong Kong Island or vice versa. This is part of our Travel in China series. At its most authentic, Hong Kong projects a vibrant duality, an ambition of opposites that work together in concert, which are the special ingredients of harmony. Here, views of steel and glass pointing to the future rest against low stone temples coiling with the incense of deeply rooted traditions. The peak tram, which trundles to the top of the highest point on Hong Kong Island, is an emblem of the city's blending of beauty and practicality, vision and deed. A 20 minute movie recap of my adventures in China with Chef Martin Yan! Grab some popcorn, watch, and enjoy the cultural sights of China! Post cool comments about what you learned from watching this, and you will be entered into a drawing for a chef cleaver signed by Martin Yan! ------------------------------------------------------- In May, I embarked on a special culinary tour with none other than celebrated TV chef host, Martin Yan! (If Yan Can Cook, so Can You!) We were in China for 14 days, arriving in Beijing, and then taking off to Xi'an, Chengdu, and Hong Kong! I had over 50 hours of video footage, and consolidated it to 20 minutes of highlights and most memorable moments on my first trip abroad! From becoming a "real woman" after climbing the Great Wall, tasting some of the most amazing dishes, watching spectacular shows, getting cooking lessons from the chefs themselves, visiting one of the largest spice markets, seeing cute baby pandas, and gaining cultural and culinary knowledge from Martin Yan himself, this was an experience that has truly opened my eyes. So grab some popcorn, watch, and enjoy the cultural sites of China! * The cool thing is that Martin conducts these tours a couple of times a year, so leave your comments and ask your questions! I'd be happy to answer anything from my time in China to how YOU can go on this tour as well!
