With tourism accounting for approximately thirty percent of the Caribbean's GDP and twenty-four percent of employment, a link between the sex trade and the tourism industry has gained recent attention. Shifts in global production, an increase of disposable income for pleasure and recreation, and a desire by North Americans and Europeans for an experience of 'exotic' cultures, are often claimed to be the cause. This volume explores the connections between the global economy and sex work, focusing on the experiences and views of women, men, and children who sell sex. Apart from attention to sex tourism in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Barbados, and Jamaica, the book also examines sex work in the gold mining industry in the hinterlands of Suriname and Guyana, and in the entertainment sector in Belize and the Dutch Antilles. It presents new insights into the Caribbean sex trade and provides proposals and strategies for addressing the situation in the twenty-first century.

How often do we wish we could say what we really feel in our guts? Do we ever feel free from restraints that stifle our true emotions and thoughts into oblivion? How long will we remain in denial of the effects of our evermore toxic world? Revelations from Outside the Box brings into our awareness the unknown traps that secretly compromise our view of reality, undermine our conversations and ever so often lead to disagreements and hostility. This book questions what we perceive and accept as reality. Relating a string of events that were observed in real life report factors, although they are the causes of untold, needless suffering, that we commonly ignore. In the introduction to Revelations from Outside the Box we already get a glance of what the book is trying to tell us. An episode shows how a family of three people live in the same household and, by closer examination, in the way they see each other are miles apart. It also suggests how a simple adjustment not only prevents such estrangement but rather fosters a sound and productive relationship, in this case, between father and son. Beyond the primary purpose this book describes certain arcane happenings of the human mind. It asks the question, could it be that there is a wellspring of wisdom that could benefit us all? A hypothetical time travel over a couple of hundreds of years gives us yet more food for us thinking outside the box.

The Mongols carved out the largest land-based empire in world history, stretching from Korea to Russia in the north and from China to Syria in the south in the thirteenth century. Along with their leader Chinggis Khan they conjure up images of plunder and total destruction. Chinggis and his descendants introduced a level of violence that had perhaps never been seen in world history. Although this book does not ignore the devastation and killings wrought by the Mongols, it also reveals their contributions. Within two generations, they developed from conquerors and predators seeking booty to rulers who devised policies to foster the economies of the lands they had subjugated. Adopting political and economic institutions familiar to the conquered populations and recruiting native officials, they won over many of their non-Mongol subjects. Mongol nobles were ardent patrons of art and culture. They supported and influenced the production of Chinese porcelains and textiles, Iranian tiles and illustrated manuscripts, and Russian metalwork. Their most significant contribution was to foster the greatest contacts among diverse civilizations in world history. The Mongol peace they imposed on much of Asia and their promotion of trade resulted in considerable travel and relations among numerous merchants, scientists, artists, missionaries, and entertainers of different ethnic groups. It is no accident that Europeans, including Marco Polo, first reached China in this period. Eurasian and perhaps global history starts with the Mongol empire. Rossabi follows the Mongol empire through to collapse due to internal disunity. Struggles for succession and ill-planned and expensive military campaigns ultimately tore apart one of the most influential empires in world history. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Dispatched from Earth after being thrown into chaos by the prospect of human life nurtured on distant planets by an ancient alien race, Meg and her fellow explorers aboard the spaceship Damocles have found in the far-flung planet Didet and the strange civilization that has developed under its seven suns the proof that will forever alter humankind s role in the cosmos. But the efforts of both Earthers and the Dideto to forge a peaceful, productive bond may be doomed by two very human traits: mistrust and superstition.

Madrid has gone from shanty town to imperial capital in the last seven centuries. The local writers of Time Out Madrid assist you in seeing the city as a native, suggesting where to stay, eat, shop and experience its cultural offerings. Famed for its wild nights and lazy days, Madrid provides a whole lot more, whether your interests lie in spectacular opera productions or chirpy folkloric zarzuela; in cutting-edge cuisine or ancient, tiled tabernas; in designer-shoe shopping or mooching around flea markets. Written by resident journalists, Time Out Madrid also covers the artistic jewels housed in the Prado, Thyssen, and Reina Sofia, as well as the etiquette of watching a bullfight or joining in with a flamenco performance, as well as where to stay and how to escape the city heat. Suggested trips out of town are also recommended. - In the frame-the intriguing stories behind some of the city's best-known paintings. - Sophisticated snacking-where to find gourmet tapas and wine-lists to match. - Winding down-the yoga centers, spas and Turkish baths springing up all over town. - Up, up and away-climbing, skiing and hang-gliding are all within reach of the city.

A wickedly funny look at opera today-the feuds and deals, maestros and managers, divine voices and outsized egos-and a portrait of the opera world's newest superstar at a formative point in her life and career. In Cinderella & Company, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Manuela Hoelterhoff takes us on a two-year trip on the circuit with Cecilia Bartoli, the young mezzo-soprano who has captured an adoring public around the world. Rossini's Cenerentola is Bartoli's signature role, and Cinderella & Company tells the fairy-tale story of her life, which started on a modest street in Rome where the Fiat was the coach of choice. The lucky break, the meteoric rise, the starlit nights and nail-chewing days are all part of a narrative that shows Bartoli rehearsing, playing, traveling, eating, and charming us with her vivacity and dazzling virtuosity. Along the way, Hoelterhoff gives us an unusually vivid, behind-the-scenes look at the opera world. The first stop is Houston, where Bartoli brightens a droopy Cenerentola production; later scenes follow her to Disney World and to the Metropolitan Opera, where a fidgety cast awaits the flight-phobic mezzo's arrival for Mozart's Cosi fan tutte. Traveling to Santa Fe, Paris, Rome, Venice, and London, Hoelterhoff drops in on opening nights and boardroom meetings, talks to managers and agents, describes where the money comes from, and survives one of the longest galas in history. Here too are tantalizing glimpses of divinities large and small: Kathleen Battle's famously chilly limousine ride; Pl cido Domingo flying through three time zones to step into the boots of an ailing Otello; Luciano Pavarotti aiming for high C in his twilight years. And we meet the present players in Bartoli's world: Roberto Alagna and Angela Gheorghiu, a.k.a. the Love Couple; Jane Eaglen, the Wagnerian web potato monitoring her cyberspace fan mail; the appealing soprano Ren e Fleming, finally on the brink of stardom. At once informed and accessible, Cinderella & Company brings the world of grand opera into sharp focus-right up to the last glimpse of Cecilia Bartoli waving triumphantly from Cinderella's wedding cake.

Who murdered the handsome young actor? And why? In 1940, against the chilling backdrop of Hitler s rise and the specter of another world war, Edna Ferber decides to follow an old dream: to act onstage. Starring in The Royal Family, the comedy she wrote with George S. Kaufman, she travels to Maplewood, New Jersey, for a week of summer stock. But her escape from the troubling daily headlines is short lived. Before opening night, a mysterious understudy is shot to death, and his murder opens up a world of lies, greed, and hypocrisy. With George Kaufman as the director of the production, the two begin a different kind of collaboration: the discovery of the murderer. As rehearsals evolve, they deal with a cast of characters who are all hiding something from their pasts, particularly days spent in Hollywood: a stage manager, a young ingenue, an American Nazi and his boisterous girlfriend, a stagehand named Dakota who is the son of a famous evangelist, his charismatic preacher-mother, her money-bags husband, and a driven acolyte of the church. Each character, Edna discovers, has some connection with the dead man, Quiet Maplewood in the summer of 1940 and all these characters maneuvered to be there. As Edna investigates, she realizes that the answer to the murder lies in what happened in Hollywood. As George wisecracks his way through the story, Edna methodically examines the facts, determined to find the answer. Opening night looms so does World War Two. Edna, resolute, believes that justice needs to prevail in a world that is falling apart.
