The troubles of the airline system have become acute in the post-terrorist era. As the average cost of a flight has come down in the last twenty years, the airlines have survived by keeping planes full and funneling traffic through a centralized hub-and-spoke routing system. Virtually all of the technological innovation in airplanes in the last thirty years has been devoted to moving passengers more efficiently between major hubs. But what was left out of this equation was the convenience and flexibility of the average traveler. Now, because of heightened security, hours of waiting are tacked onto each trip. As James Fallows vividly explains, a technological revolution is under way that will relieve this problem. Free Flight features the stories of three groups who are inventing and building the future of all air travel: NASA, Cirrus Design in Duluth, Minnesota, and Eclipse Aviation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. These ventures should make it possible for more people to travel the way corporate executives have for years: in small jet planes, from the airport that's closest to their home or office directly to the airport closest to where they really want to go. This will be possible because of a product now missing from the vast array of flying devices: small, radically inexpensive jet planes, as different from airliners as personal computers are from mainframes. And, as Fallows explains in a new preface, a system that avoids the congestion of the overloaded hub system will offer advantages in speed, convenience, and especially security in the new environment of air travel.

A memoir of a young woman, the product of a strict upbringing by conservative Indian parents, who decides to go on a RAM-Singha, her Indian version of the rumspringa, and learns how to dance, swim, drive, travel, and play in order to be happy. Rupinder Gill was raised under the strict rules of her parents' Indian upbringing. While her friends were practicing their pliés, having slumber parties, and spending their summers at camp, Rupinder was cleaning, babysitting her siblings, and watching hours on end of American television. But at age 30, Rupinder realized how much she regretted her lack of childhood adventure. Stepping away from an orderly life of tradition, Rupinder set put to finally experience the things she missed out on. From learning to swim and taking dance lessons, to going to Disney World, her growing to-do list soon became the ultimate trip down non-memory lane. What began as a desire to experience all that had been denied to her leads to a discovery of what it means to be happy, and the important lessons that are learned when we are at play. Reminiscent of Mindy Kaling, this is a warm funny memoir of the daughter of Indian immigrants learning to break free and find her own path. when we are at play.

The effects of climate change are reshaping the Arctic profoundly. Landscapes are being radically transformed, animal habitats are disappearing, and natural resources are being revealed to an energy-starved world. Veteran Arctic journalist Ed Struzik took eleven trips throughout the north to document this rapidly changing land, gaining unprecedented access to scientific expeditions, native communities and security and sovereignty experts. The product of those trips, The Big Thaw is the only book that looks at global warming's wide-ranging impact on the Arctic. Struzik melds the vivid stories of his experiences with fascinating explorations of the Arctic's past-from the alligators and giant tortoises that inhabited the north 55 million years ago, to the 19th century explorers who died searching for the Open Polar Sea-and its possible future as the center of international struggle, underground smuggling and ecological disaster.

What if you could take your grandchildren on a trip back in time to 1956? This novel combines nostalgia with a grandparent's special relationship with his grandchildren in a tale of time travel. As he clearly sees their reality, he resents the blatant deterioration of our current society. Evident is the results of inflation, moral degradation, and the destruction of family values. It is his intent that though their view of the future is dim, and having been a victim of child of abuse himself, to show them that their ten year old lives will soon change, and what they observe and experience will never control their destiny. Imagine a grandfather taking his granddaughters on journey back in time, when he was their age and the year was 1956. Together, he shares what his life was like as he walks with them as equals in this innocent age of nickel pop and penny candy. His relationship with his granddaughters is a close one, and he mourns the loss of so many freedoms that he enjoyed when he was their age. They would nver know a parent sending them out to play and saying, be home before dark, or, just stay in the neighborhood. At ten years old, in 2011, they unfortunately are aware of what the word predator means, and having their television censored for foul language or sexual content. So when telling them of the Mickey Mouse Club, or Winky Dink, they laugh as if it was all fantasy and a fabrication of their Grandpa's mind. He shares a special bond with them, because two are in a broken home shattered by divorce, and two are adopted and have formerly suffered the abuse of the foster "care" system. Being a product of a broken home and abuse himself, he understands their fears and recognizes that this new generation is having their childhood and innocence destroyed by our culture. So at the critical age of ten, he lets them visit an era when children could walk freely to the park. A time before electronics dominated and interaction with friends and family was all important. A time before musical lyrics were censored, yet those "Oldies but Goodies" were considered so threatening, as Rock and Roll was born.

Kenneth Strickfaden, innovative genius of illusionary special effects from silent films to the age of television, set the standard for Hollywood's mad scientists. Strickfaden created the science fiction apparatus in more than 100 motion picture films and television programs, from 1931's Frankenstein to the Wizard of Oz and The Mask of Fu Manchu to television's The Munsters. The skilled technician, known around Hollywood's back lots as "Mr. Electric," once doubled for Boris Karloff in a dangerous scene and was nearly electrocuted. From his birth in 1896 to his death in 1984, Strickfaden's life was filled with adventure. He spent his early years working the amusement parks on both coasts, served overseas as a Marine during World War I, took a 1919 cross-country trip in a dilapidated Model T, and favored risky pursuits like automobile and speedboat racing. He worked as an aeronautical mechanic, constructing airplanes for an historic around-the-world flight. A science teacher at heart, he gave 1,500 traveling science demonstration lectures across the U.S. and Canada. Besides covering Strickfaden's entire personal and professional life, this book discusses how later films show his influence. It reveals the fate of his collection of equipment, and is richly illustrated with numerous rare and previously unpublished photographs. Appendices provide a selection of notes, doodles, and scribbles from Strickfaden's notebooks, informal sketches, correspondence, documents, a chronology of his film and television contributions, a bibliography, a film index, and a complete subject index. Retired science teacher Harry Goldman founded the Tesla Coil Builders' Association and edited and published the TCBA News for 20 years. His work has appeared in Filmfax, Radio Today, American West and numerous other publications. He lives in Queensbury, New York.

Christopher Columbus needed a sponsor for a dangerous expedition, but the king of Portugal wasn't interested. He repackaged his proposal for the queen of Spain. She put Columbus on retainer, and the rest is history. Columbus may not have been the first to discover America, but he had a great publicist. That's where Jeff Blumenfeld comes in. For many years, using a PR specialty called adventure marketing, Jeff has connected explorers and their projects with corporate sponsors looking to demonstrate product performance in extreme conditions. His book takes the reader from Erik Weihenmayer's expedition to be the first blind man to summit Mount Everest, to the first confirmed dogsled expedition of the North Pole, to Audrey Mestre's deadly free dive expedition off Bayahibe beach in the Dominican Republic. You Want to Go Where? is the only book that not only takes you behind the scenes of some of the most dangerous adventure expeditions in recent years, but also shows how you can fund and arrange your own trip, including details on everything from grants to sponsorships. For anyone who's ever had a dream to scale the tallest mountain or cross the largest ocean, You Want to Go Where? is your ticket. Full of fascinating stories and practical advice, it's ideal for armchair explorers and budding adventurers alike.

J. and his two friends, George and Harris, decide to take a short holiday to escape the stress of their everyday lives, and so the three companions-along with a fox terrier named Montmorency-embark on a leisure tour up the Thames River, travelling from Kingston to Oxford, and musing about their lives and their trip. Three Men in a Boat is generally accepted as a work of humour due to the amusing anecdotes the three men relate during their trip up the Thames. However, author Jerome K. Jerome originally intended the book to be a travel guide for tourists participating in the then-popular activity of leisure boating. Though the book did serve as a useful travel guide-and, in fact, still does, as many of the inns and pubs named in the work are still open-the timeless humour of Jerome's writing and the extreme popularity of the book in Great Britain transformed it into an important piece of popular culture as well. In each cup of coffee we drink the major issues of the twenty-first century-globalization, immigration, women's rights, pollution, indigenous rights, and self-determination-are played out in villages and remote areas around the world. In Javatrekker: Dispatches from the World of Fair Trade Coffee, a unique hybrid of Fair Trade business, adventure travel, and cultural anthropology, author Dean Cycon brings readers face-to-face with the real people who make our morning coffee ritual possible. Second only to oil in terms of its value, the coffee trade is complex with several levels of middlemen removing the 28 million growers in fifty distant countries far from you and your morning cup. And, according to Cycon, 99 percent of the people involved in the coffee economy have never been to a coffee village. They let advertising and images from the major coffee companies create their worldview. Cycon changes that in this compelling book, taking the reader on a tour of ten countries in nine chapters through his passionate eye and unique perspective. Cycon, who is himself an amalgam-equal parts entrepreneur, activist, and mischievous explorer-has traveled extensively throughout the world's tropical coffeelands, and shows readers places and people that few if any outsiders have ever seen. Along the way, readers come to realize the promise and hope offered by sustainable business principles and the products derived from cooperation, fair pricing, and profit sharing. Cycon introduces us to the Mamos of Colombia-holy men who believe they are literally holding the world together-despite the severe effects of climate change caused by us, their "younger brothers." He takes us on a trip through an ancient forest in Ethiopia where many believe that coffee was first discovered 1,500 years ago by the goatherd Kaldi and his animals. And readers learn of Mexico's infamous Death Train, which transported countless immigrants from Central America northward to the U.S. border, but.

We are here on Earth as travellers, transient spirits on a conscious or unconscious quest for the significance of our stay. The purpose of my book is to serve as a travel guide, as an inspiration, as a motivating element for the individual who wishes to make the trip worthwhile and exciting. It is about the art of successful living. We are all headed for the same ultimate destination; where we vary are the stopovers along the way and how long we stay. We all have the same potential, where we differ is the realization of that potential. The earnest intent behind "The Buck Stops with You" is to turn people on to their own power. To remind ourselves of our greatness and at the same time our vulnerability. At the end of each chapter, I remind the reader: Memento Qui Tu Es or Remember who you are. I truly believe that we have forgotten who we truly are and who the other is. This work is beyond self-improvement, it is about self transformation, it is about self mastery. It is about taking a quantum leap into a different zone, a different way of living; it is about inspiring the reader to aspire to greater joy, peace and happiness, not as ends unto themselves but as by-products of a new state of consciousness, a new state of being. In the book, I encourage people to be themselves in this world which not only encourages conformity but prizes it. We have lost the USE of our innate intuition. We need to transcend ourselves, our body, our emotions, our intellect, as we are far beyond those. This book is about mastership. We lie in the lap of tremendous intelligence which makes us recipients of Its wisdom and truth only waiting for our acknowledgement and USE. There is a way out of all this mess. To trust and create our own imagination, our own innermost thoughts and USE them for the betterment of the whole with no one left out. In our society, we idolize sports personalities, rock stars, movie stars, we envy them, and we try to imitate them. Wh.

Molecular Revolution in BrazilF lix Guattari and Suely Rolniktranslated by Karel Clapshow and Brian HolmesYes, I believe that there is a multiple people, a people of mutants, a people of potentialities that appears and disappears, that is embodied in social, literary, and musical events. I think that we're in a period of productivity, proliferation, creation, utterly fabulous revolutions from the viewpoint of this emergence of a people. That's molecular revolution: it isn't a slogan or a program, it's something that I feel, that I live-from Molecular Revolution in BrazilFollowing Brazil's first democratic election after two decades of military dictatorship, French philosopher F lix Guattari traveled through Brazil in 1982 with Brazilian psychoanalyst Suely Rolnik and discovered an exciting, new political vitality. In the infancy of its new republic, Brazil was moving against traditional hierarchies of control and totalitarian regimes and founding a revolution of ideas and politics. Molecular Revolution in Brazil documents the conversations, discussions, and debates that arose during the trip, including a dialogue between Guattari and Brazil's future President Luis Ignacia Lula da Silva, then a young gubernatorial candidate. Through these exchanges, Guattari cuts through to the shadowy practices of globalization gone awry and boldly charts a revolution in practice. Assembled and edited by Rolnik, Molecular Revolution in Brazil is organized thematically; aphoristic at times, it presents a lesser-known, more overtly political aspect of Guattari's work. Originally published in Brazil in 1986 as Micropolitica: Cartografias do desejo, the book became a crucial reference for political movements in Brazil in the 1980s and 1990s. It now provides English-speaking readers with an invaluable picture of the radical thought and optimism that lies at the root of Lula's Brazil. F lix Guattari (1930-19920), post-'68 French psychoanalyst and philosopher, is the author of Anti-Oedipus (with Gilles Deleuze), The Anti-Oedipus Papers (Semiotext(e), 2006), and other books. Semiotext(e) has published the first two volumes of his complete essays, Chaosophy (1995) and Soft Subversions (1996), and will publish the final volume, Chaos and Complexity, in 2008. Suely Rolnik is a psychoanalyst, cultural critic, and curator who lives and works in S o Paulo, Brazil. She was a close collaborator of Guattari during her exile in Paris from the military dictatorship in Brazil.

THE SAGA OF NELIA DOE is a work of fiction based upon an actual case entrusted the author when he was personal counsel to a famous Hollywood producer - Mr. Andy Golden. The Goldens had two children, Brandy and Sandy Golden. When Sandy was a toddler, he contracted a rare spinal disease, which required hydrotherapy, in the family pool in Beverly Hills, California. The Goldens had run through six caregivers without success, and finally hired a former nanny of one of the members of the British royal family. An incident occurred which gave rise to her firing, and the hiring of a tall, dark, beautiful Belizeana, the heroine Nelia Doe, who was at that time was employed as a pool cleaner at the Golden mansion. Sandy Golden thrived under the care of Nelia Doe, and they bonded so tightly, that when Mrs. Golden planned a train trip to Washington to have lunch at the White House with the Reagans, and, thereafter, a sea voyage to London to visit Queen Elizabeth II and thereafter sample the luxuries of Paris, Nelia was required to travel with the family. But an invisible cloak covered Nelia's insurmountable problems. She was an illegal alien and a federal fugitive, wanted in a fraudulent green card scam, and for murder. Her unlawful entry into the USA was driven by her need to provide sophisticated medical care for her crippled daughter, Esmé, in Belize. Nelia could produce neither passport nor visa, and when it was explained to Sandy that Nelia would not accompany the family, he refused to go. Mr. Golden, who didn't relish the trip in any event, now had an excuse to opt out, and Mrs. Golden was out $1.5 million in non-refundable deposits plus a potential loss of face with the Reagans and Queen Elizabeth II. The law firm retained by Andrew Golden Productions refused to accept Nelia as a client, and she fled the country. Sandy Golden went into a coma resulting from the shock of Nelia's loss. The author was retained to locate her, clear up her criminal problems, and get her back into

'The past six weeks have been incredible: we've eaten frogs, drunk beer on the street with locals in Vietnam, ridden a motorcycle through rice fields, explored the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat, and scuba dived the crystal clear waters off several tropical islands. The next six months will be just as interesting and just as much fun.' As incredible as this trip has been for Adam and Darcie, the most incredible part is that they haven't spent a penny on it. For every trip there's a story. Start writing yours. Write Your Travel Memoirs will help you get started and stay motivated. What's the secret to writing stories others will find compelling? After you read this book you'll know the answer. You'll also have an outline for your travel memoir and a solid plan for writing it. The book includes White's memoir example "Finding Our Place in Cinque Terre" which describes the unique locale before the torrential rains of October 25, 2011 caused floods and mudslides which damaged Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, and surrounding hiking trails. Sarah E. White is donating all proceeds from sales of this book on Amazon in 2012 to Rick Steves' "Save Vernazza" fund.

This is a substantial and exciting new travel book by one of Canada s most accomplished writers. South Sea Journey describes an extensive trip George Woodcock and his wife have made through the far flung archipelagoes of the south seas, a trip undertaken primarily to make a documentary series for CBCTelevision. The area encompasses the romantic and remote islands of the South Pacific Samoa, Tongs, the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, New Caledonia, the New Hebrides, the Solomon Islands, and Fiji. They are for the most part hard to get to, not very much touristed, extraordinarily beautiful, and in many instances in great political disarray. George Woodcock s style as a travel writer is both personal and highly informative. He is, while describing his travels, able to provide sound background history for the whole area. He gives exceptionally well informed interpretations of the current political and social conditions of the islands, based on interviews with people at all levels of society from the king of Tonga down. A consistently appealing feature of the writing is George Woodcock s own personality humane, sympathetic, and often amusing. The result is at once an engrossing travel book and a valuable informative survey of this exotic area of the world. George Woodcock s versatility and productivity have made him a living legend among Canadian writers. He is author or editor of more than forty books, including volumes of poetry and criticism, books of travel and history about several parts of the world (most recently Who Killed the British Empire?), and important biographical studies of George Orwell, Aldous Huxley, Herbert Read, Gabriel Dumont and others. He has written extensively about Canadian history and literature and is the founder and editor of the journal Canadian Literature.
