With its picturesque harbor along the Adriatic Sea, it is easy to see why the pretty city of Rovinj in Croatia is referred to as the "Venice of of Istria." A few centuries of Venetian rule has left its elegant mark on the city's architecture and its close proximity to Venice has led to a steady flow of ocean traffic between the two cities. In fact, to save money it makes great sense to book a stay in Rovinj and combine it with a daytrip to Venice. There is no better way to see America than on foot. And there is no better way to appreciate what you are looking at than with a walking tour. Whether you are preparing for a road trip or just out to look at your own town in a new way, a downloadable walking tour is ready to explore when you are. Each walking tour describes historical and architectural landmarks and provides pictures to help out when those pesky street addresses are missing. Every tour also includes a quick primer on identifying architectural styles seen on American streets. In 1857 the Commonwealth of Massachusetts began to fill in the tidal flats west of the city center. The fill began at the Public Garden and spread westward, eventually taking 25 years to complete the project. From the beginning, Back Bay was designed to be a residential community; over the next 60 years more than 1,500 houses and apartments were built here. Back Bay represented one of the country's first concerted efforts to create a homogeneous urban environment on a grand scale. The wide streets and large building lots attracted wealthy Bostonians from Beacon Hill from the beginning. America's top architects from the Gilded Age are represented throughout the neighborhood. World War I and the Depression led to the dissolution of many of these magnificent single-family mansions and the infiltration of retail establishments. This walking tour of the Back Bay will begin on Arlington Street, fronting the Public Garden, where you would have gotten your feet wet back in 1857.

Petrus Stuyvesant received the deed to this farm in 1651, and his family held on to the land for over seven generations, until a descendant began selling off parcels of the property in the early 1800s. These blocks became the city's premier residential district. In the early 1830s, red brick row houses stretched north of Soho between Second Avenue and Washington Square. These row houses were soon joined by the ambitious ecclesiastical institutions of the city. By the second half of the 19th century, Fifth Avenue had become the premier address of the upwardly mobile. First publishers and then textile firms moved into the area vacated by its wealthy residents and replaced the row houses with practical buildings which are greatly admired to this day. Speculating devleopers began building multi unit dwellings on lots meant for single family homes and began renting out rooms and apartments to the growing working class. The "East Village" was formerly known as Klein Deutschland ("Little Germany, Manhattan). From the years roughly between the 1850s and the first decade of the 20th century, the "East Village" hosted the largest urban populations of Germans outside of Vienna and Berlin. It was America's first foreign language neighborhood; hundreds of political, social, sports and recreational clubs were set up during this period, some of these buildings still exist. Until the mid-1960s, this area was simply the north

On the surface, this novel is an inspiring tale of friendship and travel set in a crumbling world. On a deeper plane, it is an arraignment levelled at a complacent modern-day humanity for its failure to protect the earth, and itself, from its own ravages. Joss Douglas is a young man who sees the world the way it really is, but a formative experience in Africa opens his eyes to the flaws in how he plans and lives his own life. Some years later, in a world in which global civilization is faltering, with a climate that grows harsher and wilder with each passing season, he no longer sees the sense in his ordered existence, and feels that he is working towards nothing. With his fiancée Tina, who has distant roots in Brazil, he steps out of his conventional programme and they set off on a voyage of discovery to South America. While they are away, rioting, disorder and crackdowns at home leave them with the sensation that it is their home no longer. Cut adrift from their country, they must decide where they will subsequently take their lives. Fate brings them together with their friends and this diverse band of misfits, a generation in microcosm, acquire a Brazilian Kombi camper van and journey among the myriad landscapes and cultures of the South American continent, in search of a place where they can ride out tumultuous world events. It is a trip full of spectacle and colour, that takes them to Patagonia, the high Andes of Bolivia and the coast of the Pacific Ocean, and on which they must learn to break free of the rules by which they have lived all their lives. Ready to take on their future, they travel with irreverent and irrepressible humour, a healthy disrespect for authority and a well-preserved sense of wonder. For wanderers and wonderers: This is a book that explores the unsettling question of what to do and where to go when the warm embrace of civilization, and the comfort of a future that is certain, begin to fall apart.

Journeys in the Hinterlands of AfghanistanGolden Years of Nature ConversationThis book is a narrative of our trips into the mountains and plains of the country in search of its elusive wildlife. It is a testament of our encounters with the people of the land, their culture, folklore and how they cope with the rigors of life. It describes our experiences in Afghanistan during the 1970s as we were engaged in the starting of a natural resources conservation program and the setting up of national parks and reserves. We traveled to different parts of the country, met and mingled with people of the high country of the Wakhan and the Pamir mountains in northern Afghanistan and the central regions, and leaned about their lifestyles and how they coped with the rigors of harsh climate in the Hindu Kush highlands. Our journeys took us from the towering peaks of the Wakhan corridor to wetlands where we encountered thousands of waterfowl and waders during their seasonal migrations using the wetlands of Afghanistan as a resting location before crossing the high mountain country. It is a tribute to a time when the ravages of war had not torn the country apart along ethnic fault lines. A time when one could travel freely without the fear of being maimed by mines.

Book 1 DescriptionThere are quite a few advantages to having dark skin. The most important one is that when you blush it doesn't show. That cute guy on the third row has been looking at me intensely all week and I've got to say I'm enjoying the attention. In fact, I bend over a little so he can catch a glimpse of my cleavage. If he keeps staring at me like this I'm going to have to go over there introduce myself because I can tell he's probably too shy to talk to me. I chuckle a little. Of course I won't do that; Tyrone would be pissed. Yes, I have a boyfriend. We have been together for about 18 months and it's going well. I'm not sure if I'm in love with him, but I wouldn't know because I've not had a lot of experience with men. We get along and we've even talked about moving in together our last semester. My conservative mom would hate that, but we're adults; we can make our own decisions. Book 2 DescriptionAfter the incident with the Carolina Herrera text message that was actually from Clarice Henry, Tyrone and I ended our relationship. Well I ended it. I walked out on him and went back to my old apartment. Marlene just hugged me tight when I got there with my tear-stained face dragging my suitcases. Book 3 DescriptionThey say that life is like a road trip; you can either travel alone or you can get a few others to travel with you. You need to be really careful whom you let into your vehicle, though, because these people are going to be sitting very close to you and you're going to be influenced by their attitudes and their choices.I don't know for how long I sit on the bathroom floor and cry. I faintly remember hearing Tyrone knocking and asking me to open up the door. Then he went away and I must have fallen asleep because when I come to my senses it's after midnight. I'm in a daze for a while as I try to remember why I'm lying on the cold bathroom floor. Then it all comes rushing back like an avalanche of shit.

The "Lazarillo." offers a sound and credible vision of the colonial life between 1771 and 1773, as well as practical details of the trip from Montevideo up to Lima, through Buenos Aires, C rdoba, Salta, Potos, Chuquisaca and Cuzco. According to Jos Luis Busaniche, the argentine born historian, "through its pages flows a new feeling about nature, far apart from the previous letters and documents of the colonial era" Its first edition circulated in a clandestine way in America. The text is the transcription of don Alonso Carri de la Vandera's writings during his royal commission of fixing the postal system between Montevideo and Lima. The author is mentioned as "Don Calixto Bustamante Carlos Inga, also known as 'Concolorcorvo', who went along the commissioner in said journey and wrote the extracts" Calixto Bustamante Carlos Inca existence is proven, as well as documented the commission and trip of "visitador" Carri, however "Concolorcorvo" shows a curiously remarkable erudition for a man of his extraction. According to Bartolom Mitre the book "was written by an erudite person, knowledgeable of the Spanish America customs". Don Alonso Carri de la Vandera spent most of his life in Mexico and Peru, and was in Buenos Aires in 1749. His letters are written in a far from vulgar prose and full of classics quotations. It would not be strange that he had authored "El Lazarillo" himself. There is a letter from Lima addressed to the postal service administrator in Buenos Aires, don Domingo de Basavilbaso, asking him to receive and protect a don Calixto Bustamante Carlos Inca, who was starting his journey to the R o de la Plata. Abandoned and in need due to the death of "his master Se or don Antonio Guill y Gonzaga, President of the Realm of Chile", he wished to change his fortune "because the temperament of Lima had proven contrary to his health". There is no proof of Bustamante's appearance in Buenos Aires, but had it been so he would have stayed at the same time as Carri prepared his trip to Peru. It might have happened that following Basavilbaso's request the visitador found in Concolorcorvo an able secretary and the best travel company. During the trip the visitador writes confidential reports, complaining about those who surreptitiously paralyze his work. Besides him the witty Bustamante suggests invectives y scathing jokes. The visitador might have been aware of the perils involved in signing such writings. And Bustamante, who admired the visitador, might have taken care, with or without permission, to see that the events did not go unpublished. Thus could have been the "El Lazarillo" conceived: a mixture of travel book, official reports and strong sarcasm. A most simple and possible explanation that in no way diminishes a bit its amusing quality.

Walk practically anywhere in Greece and you are walking in the footsteps of antiquity. The home to such historical figures, fictional or not, as Plato and Homer. [not Homer Simpson - the other one]. As the center of modern civilization, Greece is considered the home of art, philosophy and many other aspects of culture which set us apart from other creatures. While you could literally spend months in Greece visiting and exploring archeological sites, there country is known for very modern pleasures. The beaches of Greece are world famous as is the nightlife. For nightlife, Athens is a vibrant city that more or less stays open all night long. Even on Mondays! For sheer excitement, take a taxi on a trip through the city which will make any roller coaster look tame. You can walk through the various market areas or visit the new structures and parks created for the recent Olympic Summer Games. If a tan is a must, you're best off heading to the islands. Islands such as Santorini, Ios and Mykinos are the stuff of legend among sunbathers. You can burn under the Mediterranean sun all day and party like a rock star all night. All the islands can be reached by ferry with trips taking a few hours. The Greeks are colorful and a fun-loving group of people. Sit down in a little café somewhere and you'll soon be talking to a local with tears of laughter in your eyes. Just make sure you watch out for friendly ouzo toasts. They pack a punch. A serious punch. If you're looking for a travel destination with both historical locations and a chance to loaf on the beach, nothing beats Greece. Prices are generally cheap, so give it a try.

A drug-fueled trip through the gruesome levels of Hell may sound like a fictional horror story to some, and since the traveler in question wasmovie distributor Stephen Biro, it could just as easily have been one of his film projects. But Stephen's experiences were the real, life-changing sort. They're also proof that the Lorddoes work in mysterious ways - extending all theway to squares of LSD and nitrous oxide cartridges. Armed with psychedelics, hallucinogenics and a brave desire to meet God no matter the personal cost, Stephen pushed beyond the boundaries ofsafe drug use. He took the most nightmarish of trips from a cramped one-bedroom apartment that he used for running his underground videobusiness. With initial difficulty finding God in his altered state, Stephen instead encountered depravity and grotesquery enough to make his soul weep, but he pushed on. And if that wasn't bad enough, his Hellish experiences bled over into his waking days, and his friends andacquaintances began identifying themselves to him as Antichrists, deities and other assorted beings from "the other side." Reality wasblurring and shifting, and Stephen was run utterly ragged. Could he fulfill his quest to learn universal truths before his extreme drug use took its toll Hellucination: A Memoir spares no disturbing detail of the unusual route that one man took to find Christ and the God of the Bible. The memoir also follows younger Stephen through his 1970schildhood and his bizarre early encounters with religion that drove him to Atheism.

The End and the Beginning is a story of early 19th century America that weaves an accurate history of the period with real and fictional characters into a novel of adventure and suspense where historical events are vividly presented in the narrative, dialogue and journals of its many characters. Captured in the narrative and through the adventures of many of the books characters is the work of the early abolitionists who protect runaway slaves from the violent and determined slave catchers and fosters the Beginning of the anti slavery movement and eventual overthrow of the slave culture of the south. A reader's trifecta: a humorous travelogue, a stirring adventure tale, and a touching family story." -Bart King, author of The Big Book of Boy Stuff Most people bring their inner child on an epic adventure. Joe "Metal Cowboy" Kurmaskie actually took his two kids along. For a 4,000-mile bicycle ride across America, Joe's seven-year-old son, Quinn, rides a tagalong bike attached to his dad's; and behind that is five-year-old Enzo in a bike trailer. Our hero the Metal Cowboy answers the question "What are you, crazy?" with a resounding and cheerful "Yes." Unassisted-with no support crew except his boys' comic relief and the periodic kindness of strangers-he pedals hundreds of pounds of gear and offspring over mountain passes, across the wide plains, through thunderstorms, and into the heart of what it means to be a dad. Along the way they encounter everything that makes up America-small-town kindness and inner-city heart, wild horses and highway roadkill, a bitter Vietnam vet and a hopeful young inventor, grizzly bears and bison roaming free, cyclists and monstrous RVs, a very peppy cheerleader and a visitation from the ghost of the author's father, horrible traffic and serene dirt roads, a monastery and a distillery, baseball, and yes, lots of pie. By the time they reach Washington, DC, two months after leaving Portland, Oregon, they've bonded in a rare way. Kurmaskie writes, "We share a secret, the three of us; one permanent summer in our hearts now, where we're never apart." Praise for MOMENTUM IS YOUR FRIEND "Give Huck Finn a bicycle, give Lance Armstrong a sense of humor and give Jack Kerouac a good editor and you have Joe Kurmaskie's latest road trip. Hilarious. A one-of-a-kind voice in the travel world." -Tom Lang, author of Coffee, Cat, and Mrs. Claus "A witty, whacky, and pensive midlife adventure with the Metal Cowboy and his two sidekicks. Joe rode the sort of miles we all wish we had. A highly enterta

*2013 Edition - Fully Revised and Updated as of April 2013*Welcome to Thailand - the Land of Smiles! With its warm, tropical climate, exotic landscapes, crystal blue seas, golden sandy beaches, welcoming people, delicious cuisine, array of entertainment options and affordable prices, it's easy to fall in love with Thailand. So it's hardly surprising that Thailand has become one of the world's most popular tourist destinations, attracting 20 million tourists from all over the world every year. And the most popular resort city of all is …Pattaya - Where the World Comes to Relax and PlayFor most of these visitors, one trip to Pattaya is just not enough - many dream of either relocating to the city permanently or buying a second home here to escape the winter blues. Until recently, purchasing freehold real estate in Thailand was impossible and the only alternatives - either buying leasehold or owning as a minority shareholder in a Thai company - were a major turn off. But following an amendment to the Condominium Act in 2008, it's now possible for anyone to buy a condominium in Thailand - and it's theirs for keeps! Currently condominiums in Pattaya start from under £20,000/$30,000. But prices aren't going to stay this affordable for much longer - they're starting to rise fast. So the right time to buy is right now. In this book, overseas property expert, Nick Pendrell, provides a detailed, but easy to read, buyer's guide for anyone interested in purchasing real estate in Pattaya. It will take you through the buying process from start to finish, helping you to select your perfect property for the best possible price, avoiding any potential pitfalls along the way. This version of the book is especially enhanced for e-readers, featuring more than 90 images, tables and maps in addition to over 60,000 words of text to provide the most-detailed buyer's guide ever produced on the market.

Sal and Team Three travel to Madrid, through a breathing door, and into a lonely man's weirdest dreams. Sal Brooks, newest member of Team Three of the Societas Librium Occultorum, is settling into her job and apartment in Rome. In this episode we meet the rest of the team and get a tour of the Black Archives (pro tip: don't touch anything), before being whisked off on Sal's first mission: investigate a magical disturbance in the heart of Madrid, Spain. There they find a breathing apartment door, little girls being held hostage, and some furniture that is far too alive for good taste. First days on the job are never easy… This episode is brought to you by team-writer Brian Francis Slattery and trips down a rabbit hole (or rather, through an apartment door) into some thoroughly New Weird territory. Fans of Vandermeer's Southern Reach trilogy will find much to enjoy.
